The ninth annual Black Hills Research Symposium was held recently on the BHSU campus.
The symposium is a conference to showcase undergraduate research activity at BHSU in a variety of topics from several academic areas. This year the symposium featured 17 students who presented poster sessions and 13 students who offered oral presentations.
Dr. Ben Perryman, director of Sanford Research/University of South Dakota, also spoke at the conference on biomedical research. Perryman is involved in many research projects. His research interests include studying the function of myotonic dystrophy protein kinase which regulates mitosis and cytokinesis and searching for the defective gene that causes hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a birth defect that interferes with normal heart development. He has served on numerous grant review committees for the American Heart Association and the National Institutes of Health and currently holds three patents.
The student poster session and oral presentations were judged and cash prizes were given to the top four presentations. The winners of this year’s presentations were:

Second place poster: Krista B. Highland, senior biology major from Rapid City

Third place poster: Melissa Lehman, junior psychology major from Rapid City
Faculty mentor - Scott Stoltenberg
Title: Gender Moderates Associations Between Impulsivity
and Neurotransmitter Genes
Oral Presentation: Anne Dickman, senior business administration major from Le Mars, Iowa; Tami Blewett, junior business administration major from Rapid City; and Hayley Jones, junior business administration major from Mitchell
