The Center for Economic Education at Black Hills State University has recently been awarded a grant that will provide funding for Teaching the Ethical Foundations of Economics, a high school teacher-training workshop.

The workshop is free to South Dakota high school economics or personal finance teachers and will provide all curriculum materials and teacher stipends.  Tentative dates and locations for the workshop are June 21 in Rapid City and Sept. 28 at Black Hills State University in Spearfish. Space is limited to the first 30 teachers that register.

BHSU received the competitive grant from the Templeton Foundation and the National Council on Economic Education (NCEE), a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting economic and financial literacy programs to help students develop real-life skills.

The NCEE provides opportunities for program funding to affiliated university-based centers for economic education and state councils on economic education and reaches over 150,000 teachers and 15 million students annually. There are over 200 university centers for economic education in the nation, and only 42 university centers were awarded grants.

The BHSU Center for Economic Education is affiliated with the National Council on Economic Education and the South Dakota Council on Economic Education and provides economic and financial literacy programs for South Dakota teachers and students.  The center’s main program, the South Dakota Stock Market Game Program, is a real-time stock market simulation conducted for 10-week periods during the fall and spring semesters.  Within the last year, the center conducted a series of statewide workshops to train over 60 teachers in integrating the program into their curricula. The spring session of the program began Feb. 12 with 400 teams of 960 students participating from 50 schools.
