Dr. Tom and Judy Flickema cut the ribbon to the courtyard in their namesake at Black Hills State University during a ribbon cutting dedication after the Swarm Day football game.

Black Hills State University hosted a ribbon cutting dedication for the Tom and Judy Flickema Courtyard Saturday, Sept. 19 after the Swarm Day football game.

President Kay Schallenkamp welcomed the crowd to the dedication, followed by comments from Jim Knutson, professor of art. The 5 Guys, a group of BHSU music students, entertained the crowd with a vocal selection. Tom and Judy Flickema expressed their gratitude for the courtyard namesake. The Flickemas’ extended family was also on hand to celebrate this honor.

The Flickema Courtyard, created in 2009, was named in honor of retired BHSU President Dr. Tom Flickema and his wife Judy for their dedication and service to Black Hills State University. Through their commitment to aesthetics, the BHSU campus was transformed through a number of facility and grounds improvements. Thanks to their efforts, BHSU is now recognized as one of the most beautiful campuses in the region.

Dr. Flickema, who retired from his position as president of BHSU in 2006, had a distinguished 45-year career in higher education which included 12 years as president at BHSU. Tom and Judy continue to live in Spearfish and are actively involved in a number of community organizations.
