Winners of the Johanna Meier Opera Theater Institute Young Performers Competition held at Black Hills State University were recently announced.
In the ages 9-14 category, the first place recipient was Duncan A. McGough from Rapid City for his violin performance, (teacher - Coral White); second place went to Maris Benson from Rapid City for her piano piece, (teachers - Elizabeth and Mila Belakova).
In the 15-20 ages category, the first place went to Luke Franz for from Rapid City for his piano performance (teacher - Jim MacInnes); Rachel Carroll from Spearfish received second place for her soprano performance, (teacher - Angela Weber); Jamie Williams from Gillette, Wyo. tied for third place with her soprano piece (teacher – Dr. Nancy Roberts); also receiving third place was Miguel J. Beal from Rapid City for his piano, performance (teacher - Michael E. Ross).
Entrants were required to perform one difficult memorized classical piece.
Contestants were judged on poise and stage presence as well as musicianship, and the winners received cash prizes.
The competition was held in Clare and Joseph Meier Hall on the Black Hills State University campus. The competition judges were Dr. Johanna Meier, Dr. Charis Dimaras, and Elizabeth Hastings. Dr. John Alsup served as master of ceremonies.
Sponsors of the event were the Northern Black Hills Rotary Club; Rosalie and Herb Aslesen; Black Hills State University; and the Black Hills Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
The competition is part of the Johanna Meier Opera Theater Institute, a two-week program that culminates in semi-professional opera performances at BHSU on June 26 and 27. For more information, please call 642-6420 or contact email@example.com.
