Joey Painter, who will graduate from Harding County High School this spring and has enrolled at Black Hills State University, has been awarded the first ever $12,000 Joe and Elaine Floyd Scholarship at BHSU.

Joe and Elaine Floyd recently pledged $120,000 to BHSU for scholarships. The couple has lived in South Dakota throughout their lives and Elaine attended BHSU in 1953 and later worked for the University. The Floyds established the scholarship for female students from South Dakota who have a farm/ranch background along with a strong desire to learn. The Floyd scholarship is renewable for subsequent years at BHSU as long as the student is making satisfactory progress.

Painter, an outstanding student who also has an impressive record of community involvement, plans to earn a biology degree at BHSU. She plans to go on to medical school and pursue a career in dermatology.

She had twice won the South Dakota History Day competition. She has also participated in the Academic Olympics for three years, and on the All-A honor roll throughout high school. During her junior year she was inducted into the National Honor Society. She is the Harding County Rodeo Club President and senior class treasurer.

She has played varsity basketball and volleyball for four years, receiving all-conference honors each season. She also belongs to South Dakota High School Rodeo Association and National High School Rodeo Association for 4 years.

Painter has made a strong effort in providing community service. Community service activities include taking children trick-or-treating; volunteering to read to kids and play with them; collecting soup labels for world hunger; cleaning road ditches; and cleaning up after rodeos. During the summer she helps teach Vacation Bible School. She sings Christmas carols to the elderly and collects change for the “Change a Life Foundation.”

The recently established Floyd Scholarship is one of many scholarships that BHSU offers to students. For details about applying for admission and scholarships visit: www.BHSU.edu/Scholarships.
