The fall session of the South Dakota Stock Market Game (SDSMG) program at Black Hills State University will begin Oct. 6 and end the 10-week trading period Dec. 12.

The SDSMG is a real-time online stock market simulation where teams of students research and purchase a portfolio of stocks and compete for prizes in the middle school, high school, and college divisions. According to Don Altmyer, associate business professor and SDSMG coordinator at BHSU, “students participating learn more effectively as they see how their classroom lessons apply to the real world.  Teachers have found the program boosts student motivation and attendance.” Last spring, the program had over 1,000 students on 300 teams from 40 South Dakota high school and middle schools participating.

The South Dakota Board of Education recently mandated an economics or personal financial course as a high school graduation requirement. The SDSMG program provides teachers with lesson plans by subject and grade level that correlate to national content standards in economics, personal finance, social science, and math and business education. The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), a federal agency commonly referred to as the “nation’s report card,” defined economic literacy and studied economic content at high schools nationwide. The NAEP report found that students who played the Stock Market Game outperformed the economic literacy national averages in every category including gender, ethnicity, and Title 1.

A series of free web-based teacher training workshops will be conducted for all registered teachers the week before the game starts. There is a $5 registration fee for teams of 2-3 students, which includes team-trading screens to research companies, and a Teacher Support Center that includes online lesson plans and classroom activities to integrate the program into a variety of subjects.

To register, go to www.stockmarketgame.org and click on the Register Now button, select United States of America, and choose South Dakota. Enter the school and teacher information and choose Submit Pre-Registration. Teacher and team passwords along with user identification numbers will be emailed to the teacher within 24 hours.

The SDSMG is presented by the BHSU Center for Economic Education, the South Dakota Council on Economic Education, and the Central States Securities Industry Association.
