Dr. Janeen Larsen, professor of music at Black Hills State University, has been invited to present a session at the Music Teachers Nationals Association Conference in Atlanta, Ga. next April. The session entitled “Jumping Into Jazz,” will provide music teachers with self-teaching strategies to develop jazz improvisation skills.

Larsen is the president-elect for the South Dakota Music Teachers Association and serves as the Collegiate Chair for the State Competitions. Larsen performs regularly as both a jazz and classical pianist and she is committed to helping classical piano teachers cross over into the world of jazz performance and teaching. Larsen is the author of the book Jazz Piano: A Primer for Classical Pianists, and provides workshops throughout the region.

Larsen received her master of music degrees in both piano performance and musicology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and received her Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Florida. Larsen has been teaching at BHSU for more than 30 years and currently serves as chair of the Fine and Applied Arts department.
