The Lady Yellow Jackets Closed out their season with a third place finish in the Dakota Athletic Conference Tournament. The Jackets finished in third place during the regular season with a 9-10 league record and 14-21 overall. In only their second season of competition the Lady Jackets went from a sixth place team to a third place team in the DAC.
Going into the 2008 season the Lady Yellow Jackets wanted to finish in the top three of the conference, and build a foundation with a young nucleus made up of freshman. In the first part of the season the Lady Jackets took on stiff competition to improve their team before heading into league play including a Division II team in Chadron State College, a non-conference game against Nationally Ranked Dickinson State University, and a solid team in Dakota Wesleyan University.
In conference play the Lady Yellow Jackets got off to a 4-1 start including wins over Jamestown College, Mayville State University, and Valley City State University. “Starting 4-1 gave confidence to our team to help us reach our goal. Going into the season we knew we would rely on our offensive strength to carry us through games” said Coach Gurney. Over the next fourteen games the Lady Yellow Jackets would finish 5-9 in a strong Dakota Athletic Conference including #8 Nationally Ranked Dickinson State University.
Going into the DAC Tournament the #3 seed Lady Yellow Jackets opened with #6 seed Dakota State University which they won 8-5 behind a strong pitching performance from junior Jessica Clark and great hitting throughout the lineup. The Lady Yellow Jackets had 11 hits including back-to-back home runs by sophomore Brittany Montgomery and freshman Danielle McGrath. In the second game the Lady Jackets took on the #2 seed Minot State University. BHSU won 4-3 again led by strong pitching from sophomore Karissa Norte who had a shutout going into the seventh inning. The next day the Lady Jackets took on the #1 seed Dickinson State University and lost 5-1. “We gave up three runs in the first inning but after that we pretty much played them even” added Coach Gurney. The Lady Yellow Jackets then had to take on Minot State who played through the loser’s bracket. The winner of this game would move on to face Dickinson State University in the DAC Championship. BHSU fell to Minot 3-2 in extra innings.
“We were extremely happy with our performance throughout the entire season. We achieved our goal of placing in the top three of the Dakota Athletic Conference. We raised the bar and established a level of play that we will expect from the team in years to come” said Coach Gurney.
