Spearfish, SD – Black Hills State University Yellow Jacket Football has announced signing of thirteen athletes to Letter of Intents for the 2008 season.  These thirteen combined with the previous signings brings the recruiting class to thirty-nine.  The Yellow Jackets expect to sign an additional four to five recruits to round out the incoming class.  The football season kicks off on September 6th when the Yellow Jackets take the road to meet NCAA Division II foe Southwest State, Minnesota.  The first home game is September 13th where the Jackets will host Northwestern Oklahoma.

Chris Opitz, LB – 6’, 210 – Rapid City Stevens – Rapid City, SD (University of Sioux Falls)
Earned All-Greater Dakota Honors as a linebacker as well as Team Outstanding Linebacker Award for the Raiders his senior year.  Redshirted and played one season for University of Sioux Falls before transferring to BHSU at semester.  Parents: Chuck & Marla Opitz

Brandon Stoddard, WR – 6’1, 180 – Harrisburg, Nebraska (Midland Lutheran Transfer)
Transferred in the fall from Midland and joined the Jackets for winter drills.  Stoddard will play wide receiver after lettering starting four seasons at Banner County H.S. where he was a standout track athlete as well.  Parents Monty & Lynette Stoddard

Jamie January, WR – 6’1, 180 – Sacramento, California (Transfer Modesto JC & Univ. of Mary)
Jamie arrived at Black Hills State to complete his degree and make a big impact on the field in his final year of eligibility after one season at Mary.  Outstanding hands and a fundamentally sound receiver, Jamie was the 4th leading receiver for the Marauders with 27 receptions.  He will have a good head start on things after spring drills and is expected to step right in to the line-up this fall.

Nic Prather, LB – 5’10, 190 – Marysville, CA (Yuba Junior College)
Caught the defensive staff’s eyes with his aggressive style of play.  Prather earned All Conference honors this past season at Yuba playing as an inside linebacker – he is projected to play on the outside for the Jackets this spring.  Parents:  William & Sandra Prather

Willie Padilla, RB – 5’9, 175 – Rock Springs High School (Western Wyoming JC)
A versatile athlete, Padilla was a standout football player at Rock Springs earning conference and state honors his senior season along with playing in the all star game.  An accomplished boxer, Padilla has over 150 amateur bouts including a bronze medal in the Pan Am Games.  As a weight room and effort guy he is now concentrating solely on football.  Parents:  Lawrence & Carrie Padilla

Josh Wood, DB – 6’1, 180 – Manitou Springs, CO – (Chadron State Transfer)
Attended Chadron State for two seasons after earning First Team All Conference and All Area recognition in high school.  Josh has exceptional speed and will provide both depth and experience to the Jackets defensive backfield in the fall.  Parents: John Wood & Beth Larson

South Dakota Signings

Brady Clark, LB – 6’1, 215 Fr. – West Central High School – Hartford, SD
Clark was a mainstay on the undefeated Trojan team which won the 2007 State Championship.  Earned All Conference honors as a junior and senior as well as Honorable Mentions on the Elite 45 team and All State Teams.  Was named to the Max Preps/National guard Tour of Champions Top 30 Team during his senior year.  Parents:  Steve & Tracy Clark

Trey Masterson, P – 5’10, 170 Fr. – Rapid City Central – Rapid City, SD
After leading the State in punting his senior season, Masterson earned All Greater Dakota Conference 1st Team recognition.  Masterson has a strong leg and will have the opportunity to handle the Jackets punting duties this fall.  Parents:  Bill & Julie Masterson

Tom Mollet, DE – 6’4, 250 Fr. – Vermillion High School – Vermillion, SD
Mollet is a two sport athlete at Vermillion where he competed in Football and Wrestling.  Earned 2007 All Conference Honorable Mention and team Hustle and Hardest Worker awards and was the Class A South Dakota 2008 State Heavy Weight Champion.  Mollet will play defensive end for the Jackets where his size and effort will enable him to make an early impact.

Kenny Miller, TE – 6’3, 205 Fr. – Lead Deadwood High School – Lead, SD
Kenny joins the Jackets after a very solid high school career.  A versatile athlete who participates in basketball, track, and soccer in addition to football.  Miller was chosen team captain during his senior campaign.  Parents:  Kenny & Laurie Miller

B.J. Nash, LB – 5’10, 200 Fr. – Aberdeen Roncalli High School – Aberdeen, SD
A three-time All-Conference selection and two-time All-State player has made B.J. a well known name in South Dakota 11B football.  Nash is a physical player whether it is from his linebacker or running back positions – a weight room guy who will be a great fit for the Jackets this fall.  B.J. will play in the South Dakota prep all-star game this summer. Ethan Remily, LB – 6’2, 205 Fr. – Aberdeen Central – Aberdeen, SD
A very fast linebacker with a great frame who tested great during his visit to BHSU.  Remily was selected Team Captain this past fall and will also run track in the spring.  Once he adds some weight he could be a real force in the middle for the Jackets.  Parents:  Kim & Kelly Remily

Mitch Spindler, QB – 5’11’, 175 Fr. – Douglas High School – Box Elder, SD
Spindler is a solid passer who led the 11AA this past year in passing yards while earning All Black Hills Conference for the Patriots. A four-year letter winner who chose Black Hills to play closer to home.

Luke Whalen, TE – 6’3, 205 Fr. – Gregory High School – Gregory, SD
Luke earned 9AA All Conference and All State this past season playing tight end.  Whalen is a versatile athlete who competes in basketball and track where he has earned All Conference recognition in those sports as well.  He is very athletic and yet has not even come close to reaching his physical potential, plus he is a coaches kid having played football for his father at Gregory.  Parents:  Dan & Kay Whalen

A can’t miss kid who will inspire everyone around him as described by his high school coach while playing at Spearfish High School.  Rick earned All Conference and All State honors for the Spartans as a defensive end.  Another kid who loves the weight room and competes hard every opportunity he gets.

Brady is a three-sport athlete who competes in football, wrestling, and track.  This past season he was selected as a Co-Captain of the football team and earned All-Conference honors.  In wrestling he was a state placer in the 215 weight class.  Will play defensive end and long snap for the Jackets this fall.  Parents:  Chuck & Monica Weischedel

Nick Koenig, DE – 6’3, 225 Fr. – Rapid City Stevens High School – Rapid City, SD
Nick impressed the Yellow Jacket coaches with his effort during the summer team football camp.  A relentless defensive player, Nick earned first team All-Greater Dakota Conference honors as a defensive end.  His efforts also earned him the team’s Most Valuable Player Award this past season.

Colorado Signings

Colton Harmon, DE – 6’1, 215 Fr. – Rocky Mountain High School – Fort Collins, CO
An aggressive kid off the edge, Colton earned All-Conference honors as a defensive end in the tough 5A Colorado division.  He was also selected by his teammates as defensive MVP and team captain.  Harmon will add immediate depth to the defensive end position and will be counted on to develop and play early in his career for the Jackets.  Parents:  Dan & Robin Harmon

John Reffel, LB – 5’10, 195 Fr. – Legacy High School – Thornton, CO
A very aggressive player, Reffel earned Colorado 5A All-Conference, All-Region, and All-State awards in Colorado’s highest classification.  Also, received All-Academic recognition his senior year.  John, a coach’s son, has the physical and mental skills to play either strong safety or outside linebacker and is one of the recruits expected to contribute early for the Jackets.  Parents:  Steve & Ellen Reffel

Cameron Tafoya, WR – 5”11, 160 Fr. – Skyline High School – Longmont, CO
A speed guy who is very versatile on the offensive side of the ball.  Tafoya can play outside receiver, slot, or in the backfield and once he gets the ball he knows how to run.  A three-year letter winner at Skyline he played for three different head coaches.  Parents:  Mark & Lydia Tafoya

Derrick Schmidt, WR – 5”10, 165 Fr. – Skyline High School – Longmont, CO
Derrick joins his high school teammate, Cameron Tafoya, as a receiver for the Jackets.  Schmidt earned All-Area honors his senior season and was a three-year letter winner at Skyline.  Very good speed and allusiveness from his inside receiver position – after some weight room time he has the potential to develop into an outstanding receiver.  Parents:  Rick & Jan Schmidt

Matt Riley, RB – 6’ 190 Fr. – Pueblo South High School – Pueblo, CO
Riley knows how to win – he has played in a program that has over thirty wins during his three years playing varsity football.  Matt was a 2007 Team Captain and earned All-City and All-Conference honors his senior season along with track honors in both the 100 and 200 meter sprints.  A strong back that runs with a physical style inside and has the finesse to get to the perimeter as well.  Father:  Chris Riley

Eric Mestas, QB – 5’8 170 Fr. – Thompson Valley High School – Loveland, CO
A two-time All Conference selection in the Colorado 4A classification where Eric was a standout on both sides of the ball.  Tested very well on his campus visit and will compete at the quarterback position where his running and passing skills will gain him early attention.  Parents:  Alex & Jenifer Mestas.

Wyoming Signings

Stephen Easton, LB – 6’1, 200 Fr. – Southeast High School – Torrington, WY
One of the most accomplished players in Wyoming where Easton has excelled in football, wrestling, and track.  Attended the Jackets summer camp and immediately caught the staff’s attention.  A two-time Football Super 25 selection and 1A Conference & State Player of the Year, Easton also went undefeated this winter in wrestling - winning the 189 pound classification.  Stephen will play inside linebacker for the Jackets this fall.

Scott Soderstrom, LB – 6’, 190 Fr. – Worland High School – Worland, WY
The combination of good academics, weight room strength, and speed make Soderstrom a great fit for the Jackets line backer corps.  Earned All-Conference and All-State honors his senior season and will play in the Wyoming All-Star game this summer.  Scott has also earned state recognition in swimming and soccer during his high school years.  Parents:  Doug & Shannon Soderstrom

Tyler Angell, WR/DB – 6’, 170 Fr. – Lovell High School – Cowley, WY
Tyler is an all around athlete with good speed who could possibly play as a receiver or defensive back this fall.  A three year letter winner who led his team in receptions this past season, Angell is currently running indoor track and will also compete in outdoor this spring.  Parents:  Jeff Angell & Jennie Rael. 

Isaac Fitzgerald, DE – 6’2, 190 Fr. – Shoshoni High School – Shoshoni, WY
Fitzgerald was an impact player for the Wranglers this past season earning 2A All-Conference and All-State Honors at his defensive end position.  He was also among the state leaders in defensive points.  Isaac has a great frame and with a year of weights will develop into a force on the field.  Parent:  Mary Fitzgerald.

Zach Cottrell, FB – 5’11, 215 Fr. – Rock Springs High School – Rock Springs, WY
A bruising type fullback, Cottrell paved the way for fellow backs in the Tiger offense.  Zach’s was a two time letter winner and his senior play earned him a first team All-Conference selection. Fullbacks play a major role in the Jacket offense and Zach has the talent to compete early.  Grandparents:  Tom Cottrell & Jeanie Mitchelson.

Kellan Anderson, WR – 6’, 180 Fr. – Wheatland High School – Wheatland, WY
An outstanding athlete who has the ability to play either side of the ball in college.  Kellan was selected as a First Team All Conference receiver his senior year in helping the Bulldogs earn two consecutive playoff berths.  Parents:  Mike & Jeanna Anderson

Chase Tyson, OLB – 5’11, 190 Fr. – Wheatland High School – Wheatland, WY
In addition to being selected a team captain, Chase went on to earn All-Conference and All- State honors as well as being chosen to the Super-25 team and Wyoming All-Star game.  A two sport athlete, Tyson earned three varsity letters in football and four in wrestling where he was a two-time state placer with a third place finish this past season.  Parents: Kelly and Misty Tyson

Levi Bain, DL – 5’11, 225 Fr. – Wind River High School – Crowheart, WY
Levi was a two-time 2A All-Conference and All-State Linemen for Wind River the two seasons.  Bain is a four year letter winner who also competed in wrestling where he placed third at the state wrestling tournament in the 215 class this past winter.   Parents:  Joe & Joy Bain

Curtis Lindgren, DB – 5’11, 170 Fr. – Greybull High School – Greybull, WY
Curtis was a three sport athlete for the Buffalos during his senior year.  Lindgren earned first team 2A All Conference honors and Honorable Mention All-State.  In addition to football Curtis was all conference in basketball and a state track qualifier.  Parents: David & Peggy Lindgren

Regional Signings

Zach Seleg, LB, 6’, 185 Fr. – Forsyth High School – Forsyth, MT
Earned All-Conference and All-State honors this past fall where Seleg accounted for 120 tackles from his linebacker position.  Has outstanding instincts and will develop into a fine inside linebacker at the college level after gaining a year of weight and strength.  Parents:  Joe & Sheri Seleg

Stephen Anglin, DB – 5’8, 180 Fr. – Sidney High School – Sidney, NE
The Jackets were looking for a safety who plays physical and is athletic and Anglin’s style of play looks to be a fit.  A three year letter winner, All-Conference and All-District recognition during his senior year in high school, Stephen is also competes in basketball, track, and baseball.  Parents:  Chris & Dede Anglin

James Erickson, OL – 6’2, 240 Fr. – Warner Robins High School – Bonaire, Georgia
Erickson developed an interest in Black Hills State after living in the area (father stationed at Ellsworth Air Force Base) and from former All DAC performer and Warner Robins alumni John Smit, who played for the Yellow Jackets in 2005 & 2006.  James earned two varsity letters and started for Warner Robins his junior and senior years.  His football team which is considered one of the best football programs in Georgia year in and year out.

Javan Andrews, WR – 5’10, 185 Fr. – John Glenn High School – Norwalk, CA
An all-around athlete and player this past season despite not having played football since his freshman year.  Javan was a first team All-Suburban League selection while playing three (receiver, tailback, & wingback) positions most every game.  He also played defensive back and returned kicks.  A leader and of strong character, Andrews was chosen as a team captain.  Parents:  Kevin Andrews & Gwen Kimbel
