The Yellow Jackets got off to an early qualifying start for the 2008 indoor season as five athletes set qualifying marks for the NAIA Championships to be held in early March in Johnson City, TN. Aubrey Baxter (Redfield, SD) was a double event winner and posted automatic qualifying marks in both the shot put and weight throw with tosses of 49’3.75” and 62’3.75”. Amber Brodersen (Wolsey, SD) also hit an automatic qualifier in the shot put with a 2nd place toss of 47’1”. The men followed suite as Eric Flores (Custer, SD) and Tyg Long (Custer SD) captured first and second place finishes in both the shot put and weight throw. The two of them posted automatic qualifying marks in both events, earning themselves a trip to the National Meet in March. Eric finished the day with marks of 53’3” in the shot put and 60’7.25” in the weight throw. Tyg followed closely in both with a shot put mark of 52’4.75” and 58’3” in the weight throw. The final qualifier of the day was senior Lee Diede (Gillette, WY). Diede cleared a height of 15’ for his first vault competition of his final season, which was good enough for a provisional qualifying mark. Overall the Yellow Jackets had top finishers in twelve of the thirty events held in competition. Other teams competing included Chadron State College, South Dakota School of Mines, and Montana State- Billings. The next competition for the Yellow Jackets will be on January 19th in Vermillion, SD, when the University of South Dakota hosts the Bill Hillenbrand Open.
