The Yellow Jackets Men's Basketball team was in Rapid City this past weekend to face Dana College on Friday night and Johnson & Wales University on Saturday afternoon.
On Friday both teams stayed even for the first 13 minutes of the first half before Dana College went on a 19-6 run behind hot shooting to take a 29-45 lead going in at halftime. In the second half the Yellow Jackets would chip away at the lead getting within 5 points. Black Hills State had two three-point chances to cut Dana's lead to 2 but fell short. The final was 77-82. The Yellow Jackets were led by freshman Cain Atkinson with 19 points. Freshman Spencer Childress had 11 points and four assists and freshman Will John Johnson added 10 points and eight rebounds.
Saturday the Yellow Jackets faced Johnson & Wales who had beat South Dakota School of Mines the night before in overtime. Again the game was close for the first 10 minutes before the Yellow Jackets closed out the first half with a 20-6 run to take a lead into halftime of 48-34. In the second half the Yellow Jackets started right where they left off in the first half by increasing their lead and eventually taking the game 93-58. The Yellow Jackets had five players in double figures led by junior Randy Herman and Will John Johnson who both had 16 points and five rebounds. Cain Atkinson had 14 points, senior Forrest Dorr had 13 points, and junior AJ Fodness added 10 points and six rebounds.
The 4-4 Yellow Jackets will be at home this Saturday night as they take on Division II Chadron State at 7:30pm immediately following the women's game.
