Last Thursday the Yellow Jackets traveled to Omaha, Nebraska to face Midland Lutheran College and Grace University in the Grace Classic. Friday night the Yellow Jackets got off to a fast start taking in a halftime lead of 16 points 41-25. In the second half the Black Hills State came out and increased their lead to as many as 19 points. Midland Lutheran would put together a late comeback but fell short as the Yellow Jackets were able to capatalize from the free throw line to take the game 73-62 and improve to 3-2 on the season. Black Hills State was led by senior Sam Kim with 17 points and nine rebounds. Junior Randy Herman added 11 points.
On Saturday the Yellow Jackets were back in action to take on the host team Grace University who beat South Dakota School of Mines the night before. The Jackets got off to a slow start offensively which allowed Grace to gain some momentum taking a halftime lead of 26-40. In the second half the Black Hills State outscored the Royals 42-28 to tie the game at the end of regulation on senior Corey Doolan's three-pointer. In overtime, Grace outscored the Yellow Jackets 5-12 taking the game 73-80. Black Hills State was led by senior Corey Doolan and freshman Cain Atkinson who both had 14 points. Junior Randy Herman had 13 points and freshman Will John Johnson added 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The 3-3 Yellow Jackets will be back in action this Friday night as they will travel to Rapid City to take part in the US Bank Classic hosted by South Dakota School of Mines. Friday the Yellow Jackets will take on Dana College at 5:00pm and Johnson & Wales University on Saturday at 3:00pm.
