Going into this season Coach Albers had said that he would be disappointed if they weren’t better than last season. The Yellow Jackets started with a bang going 13-0 to start the 2007 season. At one point they improved to a 21-3 record and had defeated the 9th ranked team in the country in Columbia College who is entering post season play 5th in the country. They also took the 6th ranked team in the country in Dickinson State University to five games losing in the final match 18-16.
The Yellow Jackets have a bright future returning a good nucleus for the 2008 season despite losing five seniors. “We are losing five incredible seniors in Co-Captain’s Mindi Mayer and Carly Benz, as well as, Jennifer Weitzel, Chelsey Mort, and Victoria Cross. These seniors have been our backbone for four years helping us to two 20 win seasons and getting this program to where it is today” said Coach Albers. Sophomore Kristen Engle was recognized as 1st Team All-DAC. She led the conference in blocks and was third in kills and hitting percentage. Sophomore Mandy Brumfield was one of the top setters in assists per game and aces per game earning her 2nd Team All-DAC honors. Freshman Maggie O’Neill had a tremendous first season at Black Hills State as she was named 2nd Team All-DAC for being one of the top hitters in the conference. She was also named Freshman of the Year in the DAC. Coach Albers received Coach of the Year honors in the conference guiding the team to a 22-5 record.
“Next year we return strong leaders and players in the freshmen and sophomore classes. With these players returning stepping into the roles vacated by the seniors along with a strong recruiting class it is our goal to improve from this year and win the DAC Championship and be a nationally ranked team” added Coach Albers.
