Going into the game the Yellow Jackets knew that if they wanted to move up in the regional rankings they had to take care of business against the NAU Mavericks. This was a late scheduled non-conference game that was agreed upon by both coaches a week ago. Black Hills State came out on fire to take game one but it wasn’t enough as the Mavericks went on to win the match in four games.
In game one the Yellow Jackets led most of the way leading at the mid way point and taking a 25-20 lead at the end of the match. The Yellow Jackets had great energy that carried them to a 30-22 victory.
In game two NAU got off to a quick start taking an early lead 6-8. The Yellow Jackets would fight back to make the game close throughout. The Mavericks would eventually pull away at the end of the match to tie the match. The final score of game two was 26-30.
The third game was a classic match between the two strong opponents. With the score being tied at 13-13 and later at 25-25 the Yellow Jackets and Mavericks would battle all the way to the end. NAU took a late lead at 28-29 to eventually win the game 29-31.
In the fourth game NAU got off to a fast start 0-5 and would extend that lead to 10-19. The Yellow Jackets tried to get back in the game fighting back and forth but the Mavericks were too much as they won game four 20-30.
“We were ready to compete tonight and it showed right away in game one. We had our chances to win game three which would of gave us a 2-1 lead but we let them slip away. Losing game three that way really killed our momentum going into game four” said Coach Albers.
The Yellow Jackets were led in kills by sophomore Kristin Engle with 12. Freshman Maggie O’Neill added 10 kills. Sophomore setter Mandy Brumfield had 38 assists on the evening. The Yellow Jackets will be back in action this Friday and Saturday night as they will take on Dakota State University and Jamestown College. Both games will be played at the Donald E. Young Center at 7:00pm.
