The Yellow Jackets entered the game tonight 15-2 going against 9th ranked Columbia College. The Yellow Jackets got off to a two game lead behind strong net play. The Cougars came back to win the next two games by a total of four points gaining momentum going into game five. In game five, both teams played back and forth as the Yellow Jackets took a lead late to help them win the match 3-2. “I knew going in that were excited to be at home against a ranked team. I felt we were focused and ready to go from the start” said Coach Albers.
The Jackets controlled both games one and two by having strong net play behind senior Mindi Mayer, sophomore Kristin Engle, and freshman Maggie O’Neill. The Yellow Jackets got off to big leads in the middle of both matches to cruise to a 30-22 win in game one and 30-25 win in game two.
In games three and four, Columbia College came roaring back raising their level of play. Both games were close all the way to the end with the Cougars scored late to take the advantage. Columbia took both games by scores of 28-30 and 29-31.
The final game was extremely close with the score being tied at 7-7 and 13-13. The Yellow Jackets were able to score the final two points to win the match 15-13. “We really executed out of the middle well to open up our outside game” added Coach Albers. The Yellow Jackets were led in kills by Kristin Engle with 28 kills. Freshman Maggie O’Neill had 12 kills and senior Mindi Mayer added 11. Sophomore setter Mandy Brumfield had a great game leading the way with 54 assists. Senior Carly Benz led the way with 10 blocks.
The Yellow Jackets will be back in action this Wednesday night as they will be in Rapid City to take on rival South Dakota School of Mines.
