On Saturday, the Yellow Jackets took the lead early and never looked back as they went on to beat Dickinson State University 23-3. “We played a really solid first half and were able to build momentum as the game went on. This was the first game we didn’t have to work out of hole” said Coach Scott. The Yellow Jacket took a 14-3 lead into halftime. Dickinson State received the ball to start the second half. After a great defensive stand, Black Hills State started an 11 play drive which ended with a Tanner Ehrlich touchdown run to make the score 21-3. Later the Yellow Jackets would force a safety to bring the final score to 23-3.
Offensively the Jackets only had one turnover on the afternoon. “Drew did a nice job making good decisions and being patient” said Coach Scott. Sophomore Ryan Fagerstrom led the Jackets in receiving and also had two touchdown catches. The Yellow Jackets had a great balanced attack as they recorded 175 yards rushing and 132 yards through the air.
The Yellow Jackets played really well defensively as a unit, being without three starters that did not make the trip due to injuries. Freshman Richard Fairhead started his first college game and recorded 17 tackles. “Our execution on the defensive side was as good as we have seen all year. We played great team defense” added Coach Scott.
Special teams again had a solid performance with freshman kicker Kraig Tafoya averaging 41 yards on 5 punts. The Yellow Jackets special teams also accounted for a blocked punt which they recovered in the end zone for a safety and two big punt returns giving them great field position.
The Yellow Jackets will be home this Saturday for Swarm Days as they take on rival South Dakota School of Mines & Technology at 1:00PM MST.
