The Yellow Jackets volleyball team opened a week ago with a scrimmage at the Donald E. Young Center against South Dakota School of Mines, Sheridan College, and Miles City College. The following day they traveled to Dickinson, North Dakota to scrimmage South Dakota School of Mines, Dickinson State University, Minot State University, and Northern State University.

Coach Albers had this to say about the scrimmages, “We made early season mistakes but as the scrimmages went on we finished stronger and more consistent. I was able to play a lot of players to see what combinations worked the best. Kristin Engle has really taken off where she finished last season being sharp around the net. Annie Grim played well defensively and Kayla Haines blocked well around the net. Overall I was pleased with our performance.”

This past weekend the Yellow Jackets traveled to Billings, Montana to play five matches all against Frontier Athletic Conference teams. Thursday, the 23rd of August, we faced off against Rocky Mountain College where we won the match in five games. “We rested Kristin Engle and Mandy Brumfield who both had nagging injuries. Through the match we were a little inconsistent but we did play well at times,” said Coach Albers.

On Friday the team faced Rocky Mountain again at 2:30PM, where this time the roster was full and the Yellow Jackets won in four games. “We were more consistent adding Kristin and Mandy back in the lineup. They really brought confidence and leadership to our team,” added Coach Albers. The Jackets stumbled in game 3 losing to Rocky but bounced back to win game 4. That same night the Jackets played a solid team in Montana State University-Northern. “They were a really tall team across the front line but we were able to jump on them early,” said Coach Albers as they put them away in three games.

Saturday afternoon the Jackets played Carroll College. According to Coach Albers things weren’t really connecting but we were able to beat them the first two games. In the third game we stumbled again losing to Carroll. “Game four we came back and played the best we had of the day so far,” said Coach Albers. That night they played their final game of the weekend against Montana Tech. The Jackets showed their dominance by beating them in 3 games. According to Coach Albers, “Montana Tech was the strongest Frontier Conference team in the tournament. Our serving game was strong and helped our timing for us to win in three games.” The Yellow Jackets finished the weekend 5-0 with a great start to their season.

This weekend our volleyball team will travel to Moorhead, Minnesota to play in the Concordia College Tournament. On Friday, August 31st, we will play Rocky Mountain College and Bemidji State University. On Saturday, the 1st of September, we will play Valley City State University and Mayville State University. The following week they will return home to face rival South Dakota School of Mines on Wednesday, September 5th.

Injury Report: Kristin Engle and Mandy Brumfield fill good after the weekend. Freshman Maggie O'Neill is still nursing a bad ankle.
