The Yellow Jackets took the field on Saturday afternoon for their last tune up scrimmage before they travel to Helena, Montana to play Carroll College. “We wanted to start out really basic on offense to minimize mistakes. The execution was good and we had no penalties,” according to Coach Scott.
Offensively the Yellow Jackets got into a groove as the scrimmage went on and the staff started to throw more things into the mix. The offense was really working on being consistent throughout the scrimmage. “We need to be able to run plays and not make a series of mistakes,” said Coach Scott. The running backs looked like they are showing promise by making plays in the open field. The offensive line is a young group but all return with experience. Overall the offense showed promise as they will enter there final week of preparation for Carroll College.
“Our special teams group is really showing some good things under new assitant coach Ryan Gatch who came over from Minot State University. We have guys still fighting for spots and learning new schemes,” said Coach Scott.
Defensively the Yellow Jackets are still looking to improve going into their final week of practice before Saturday. “With 8 returnees from a year ago we still need to improve on executing schemes, and getting everybody on the same page. All of the mistakes that were made can be corrected,” according to Coach Scott. The defense did show signs of where they were at the end of last season but are still looking to improve.
Only nagging injuries as the Yellow Jackets will have a full strength roster going into Carroll College.
Matt Frankenfield, Brandin Santi, Wacey Coleman, and Darrel Neiman were all held out of the scrimmage on Saturday to rest a few nagging injuries so they are healthy for this weekend.
