Spearfish, S.D. – The Black Hills State University softball team inked Cassie Smith as the first recruit for the 2011-2012 season.  Smith, a senior at Pine Creek High School in Colorado Springs, Colo. has earned four varsity letters as well all-conference honors.

“From the first day I watched Cassie play, I knew she would fit into the culture of our program here at Black Hills State,” said head coach Amy Gurney.  “Cassie has the speed and aggressiveness that we are looking for out of this recruiting class.  She has shown the potential to be a leader as we move to NCAA Division II.”

Cassie Smith is the daughter of Chuck and Carmen Smith who reside in Colorado Springs, Colo.  Smith earned a varsity letter in softball all four years of her high school career.  As a junior, she was second team all-conference and as a senior she moved up to first team all-conference.  Smith also excels in the classroom, earning first team academic all-state honors.  Smith will major in Exercise Science with the goal of becoming a Physical Therapist.
