Spearfish, S.D. – The Black Hills State volleyball team is conducting two-a-day practices this week and will compete in exhibition play in this Saturday and Sunday.
On Saturday, the Yellow Jackets will travel to a scrimmage in Dickinson, N.D.  Then, the volleyball team will return to compete in a scrimmage at the Young Center on Sunday.  Head Coach Jhett Albers is pleased with what he has seen in practice so far this preseason.
“We are more athletic than we have been,” said Albers.  “Defensively, we are very quick to the ball.  We still need to work on our level of consistency though.  We have been having very competitive practices up to this point and want to build on that going into this weekend.”
Albers went on to discuss how well all of the student-athletes are performing.
“No one person is really standing out above another. Jennifer (Weitzel), Amber (Elliott), Alyssa (Boeding) and Mindi (Mayer) are all playing well right now.  I have been impressed with how the young players have kept up with the upper classmen step-for-step.  It has created a unique situation for us,” stated Albers.
This weekend’s exhibition schedule will give the coaching staff a chance to evaluate the team in a competition setting.
“This weekend we will be looking for players to step up and make a play when plays need to be made,” said Albers.  “It’s those impact players that will find themselves on the floor in key situations and competing for spots in the starting lineup.  Making plays and consistency will be the areas of focus this weekend.”
