Spearfish, S.D. – The annual spring football scrimmage and gridiron gathering was a success this past weekend with nearly 500 people attending the game and over 70 participating in the First Annual Gridiron Gathering.

The football game pitted the Yellow Jacket offense led by Ryan Fagerstrom against the Yellow Jacket defense led by Wacey Coleman, Richard Fairhead, Forest Sainsbury and Sterling Boylan.  The team was fired up to be hitting again and showcasing the hard work put in during the offseason. Following the scrimmage was a BBQ with the proceeds benefiting the student-athlete scholarship fund.

“Overall I thought the spring game was a success,” said head coach Jay Long.  “Our defense showed how good they can be and our offense finished on a consistent note. I also felt that the First Annual Gridiron Gathering was well received.  It was great meeting football alumni and talking to players that played under me.  We can’t wait to do it again next year.”

Participants in the Gridiron Gathering received a tour of the campus, attended the football game and ended the evening with a banquet at The Lodge at Deadwood.

“We had about 70 football alumni and guests which is a great turn out for our First Annual Gridiron Gathering,” said assistant athletic director and football alum (1994-1998) Jade Temple, “It was a great opportunity to reconnect past football players, there was a representative from every era from the late 1940’s to the present team.”

The Yellow Jackets will kick their season off on the road against Grand View University August 28, 2010 in Des Moines, Iowa.
