The Yellow Jackets softball team returned this past weekend from a very impressive road trip in Tucson, Arizona to open up the 2010 season. Coach Gurney and the Yellow Jackets went 7-4 in their 11 games in Tucson against some of the best teams in the NAIA. “We are extremely excited about how we played in Tucson but we know that the season is only beginning,” said Head Coach Amy Gurney.
The Yellow Jackets had some great standout play from sophomore pitcher Katie Wagner who went 5-1 on the mound averaging six strikeouts per game. Senior Karissa Norte had three home-runs including a two-run shot that gave the Yellow Jackets a victory over Northwestern College. Junior Ashley Berg had a standout week with an on base percentage of over.900. Ashley averaged one stolen base per game as well. Junior Krista Gleiforst hit in the upper .300s and led the team in RBIs for the week.
Some newcomers that found success in Tucson were freshman Alex Huntington who pitched a shutout against Cardinal Stritch University and freshman Kyley Barela moved up to two in the batting lineup and was outstanding defensively at 2nd base.
This weekend the Yellow Jackets will take on Dakota State University in Rapid City at the Parkview Softball Complex due to field conditions in Spearfish. Please check the schedule for exact game times on Saturday and Sunday.
