Spearfish, S.D. - Black Hills State received a gift of nearly $3,000 in memory of former Spearfish resident and track and field standout, Mark Larscheid.

In an effort to celebrate Mark’s life and preserve his memory, the family has organized the Sixth Annual Mark Larscheid Memorial Golf Tournament. The proceeds went to benefit the Black Hills State track and field program in the form of the annual Mark Larscheid Memorial Track and Field Scholarship. This year’s golf tournament had 92 players participate.

“The Larscheid is a great tournament and such a great to honor the memory of Mark,” said Black Hills State Director of Development, John Kietzmann. “We are so thankful that we can be a part of this wonderful event.”

In August 2000, the Larscheid family and the Spearfish community experienced a great tragedy when Mark Larscheid’s life was cut short in an automobile accident in Spearfish Canyon. Born and raised in South Dakota, Mark and his wife Mary raised their three children – Shane, Summer and Slade. Mark was a loving husband, father, gifted teacher, dedicated coach and friend. He set the South Dakota high school state record in the 110-yard hurdles in 14.1 seconds in 1969. That record has yet to be broken.
