Black Hills State Yellow Jacket volleyball partook in the Quality Inn Classic in Hastings, N.E. this past weekend. Two of the Yellow Jackets four games were against NAIA Top 25 teams as Black Hills State fell in three of their four matches moving them to 10-8 overall.

The weekend looked promising from the start as Black Hills State battled (#8) Morningside College. The Yellow Jackets stepped onto the floor and played well right away. The big block and numerous kills from the Jacket side pushed the match into five sets. Unfortunately, the Yellow Jackets lost momentum early in the fifth set and picked up their first loss for the weekend, 26-24, 21-25, 25-17, 18-25, and 15-8.

The second of Friday’s back-to-back matches was the meeting with Southern Nazarene University. Withthe bitter taste of the loss to Morningside still fresh in the mind of the Lady Yellow Jackets, they came out into their second match flat and unfocused. SNU took immediate advantage and never let up. The Yellow Jackets could not seem to get any offense or defense going as they lost in three games 21-25, 13-25, and 17-25.

The Yellow Jackets came back to the floor Saturday morning as they looked to bounce back against (#21) Doane. The matched looked reminiscent of Friday as the Yellow Jackets just couldn’t seem to find their game offensively or defensively. Doane took advantage of every play that they could and proved that they were indeed ranked for a good reason. Black Hills State fell to Doane in just three sets 22-25, 17-25, and 15-25.

The fourth and final game of the tournament for the Yellow Jackets was a rematch against Briar Cliff. Black Hills State had beaten the Chargers in Yankton, S.D. the previous weekend and looked to do so again. The Yellow Jackets showed their ability to bounce back from a few tough losses as they began to look much more like themselves out on the floor. The change in team mentality was evident as the Lady Jackets began to play with intensity and excitement. Black Hills State was able to beat Briar Cliff in three sets 25-14, 25-22, and 26-24.

The Lady Yellow Jackets will play the first games of the DAC Conference season on Friday and Saturday at home. This Swarm Week match-up features Dickinson State University and Minot State University. Come out and support the Yellow Jacket volleyball team at the Donald E. Young Center gymnasium Friday at 8 p.m. and Saturday at 7 p.m.
