The BHSU football program traveled to Alva, Oklahoma this past weekend to take on NAIA powerhouse Northwestern Oklahoma State University.  The field conditions were wet due to the rain that started early in the morning Saturday and didn’t stop until halftime.  The Yellow Jackets went on to defeat the Rangers 21-7.

Defensively the Yellow Jackets were led by senior linebacker Sean Sweet from Loveland, Colorado. who recorded seven unassisted and three assisted tackles on the afternoon.  “Going into the game I knew that our defense was going to have a big challenge.  Northwestern Oklahoma State has a very talented offense.  I thought that our defense played aggressive and did a great job stopping their running game,” said Head Coach Jay Long.  Offensively the Rangers rushed 55 times for only 108 yards.

BHSU offensively was led by senior wide receiver Corey Wheeler from Cheyenne, Wyoming who had seven catches for 108 yards and one touchdown.  For his efforts this past Saturday Corey was named DAC Offensive Player of the Week.  Senior running back Clint Nicholes from Afton, Wyoming also had a big afternoon accounting for two touchdowns.  “With the weather conditions the way they were our emphasis was on ball control.  The changing point in the game was when we took the ball 93 yards in 13 plays which put the momentum on our side,” added Coach Long.

The Yellow Jackets will return this week for their home opener.  This week is also Swarm Days for the Yellow Jackets.  Saturday the activities will begin with the legendary parade at 10 AM, followed by the tailgating festivities in the Young Center Parking Lot which will feature Kory & the Fireflies.  Kickoff will follow at 1 PM as the Yellow Jackets will take the field against Mayville State University.  Both teams enter the contest 1-1.  If you are unable to attend the game then you can see it live through pay per view on the BHSU Athletic Website.
