Friday, the Lady Yellow Jackets met up with both Mount Marty and Briar Cliff in the first day of the DWU/Mount Marty Tournament. With the momentum from Wednesday night’s win still fresh in the huddle, the Yellow Jackets stepped onto the floor and posted two more much needed victories.

The first match of the afternoon for Black Hills State was against co-host Mount Marty College. Struggles from the Yellow Jacket side kept the first set close early, but the Jackets were able to pull away and take the set 25-21.

The second and third sets also went to the Yellow Jackets who were solid on the net defensively. Tough play on the net from junior Kalin Engle of Newcastle, Wyo. played a large part in the momentum and confidence of the Yellow Jacket side. The Yellow Jackets were able to down the Lancers in the next two sets to win the match 25-16 and 25-16.

The second match of the day matched the Yellow Jacket team against a strong side from Briar Cliff. It was the Yellow Jackets who struck first to take set one 25-19. However, Briar Cliff battled back as the Jackets struggled offensively in the second set, losing to the Chargers 19-25.

The match continued to go back and forth in the next two sets with both teams battling throughout. The Yellow Jackets were able to gain back the advantage by winning set three 26-24 behind an impressive performance from Kylee Lamb, a freshman from Onida, S.D. Still, the Chargers fought back once again to defeat the Yellow Jackets 18-25 to push the game to five sets.

The determination of the Lady Yellow Jackets was evident the second they stepped onto the floor for the fifth set.  The Yellow Jackets play elevated to a level above that of their opponent as they took the match by winning the fifth and final set 15-12.
