The Black Hills State University cross country teams open the 2009 season today, September 4, with a 4k road race against Wartburg College from Waverly, IA. The race will be the opener for both teams with strong cross country traditions. The women’s team from Wartburg is ranked fourth in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's preseason top 35 for Division III. There men are unranked. The Yellow Jacket men’s team is ranked eleventh in the NAIA preseason rankings while the women are ranked twenty-third.

The race will be held on the Creek Side Loop just off Old Belle road with the start at the southern entrance of Creek Side (just past Serenity Corner assisted living) and finish near the north entrance. The women’s race will start at 4:00 pm with the men to follow at 4:15. There is very limited parking and all vehicles will have to park off the side of the road near the finish and will not be allowed on the road during the race. All team members, parents and alumni runners are invited to a cookout at 6:00 pm in the hall of fame room at the Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center.
