Friday the Black Hills State volleyball team played NAIA #4 ranked Azusa Pacific and Dana College in the Red Raider Classic. Friday’s matches were a big test for the Lady Yellow Jackets as they looked to measure up against two well coached teams. The Yellow Jackets were able to rise to the occasion and push their record to 4-3.

The day started off with the much anticipated battle with (#4) Azusa Pacific. The Yellow Jackets came out a little flat in the first set and did not pass the ball well which led to a 17-25 loss. However, the Yellow Jackets immediately responded to take set two 25-16 with remarkable passing as well as imposing serves.

The spark in momentum earned from that game fueled the Yellow Jackets into two more impressive set victories over the Cougars, 25-18 and 25-19. The Yellow Jacket net defense was impeccable, shutting down the Azusa attack. Kristin Engle dominated the net with 9 kills and 13 blocks. The Yellow Jacket backcourt led by Carina Sweet’s 10 digs and Stephanie Stull’s 4 service aces also played an essential role in the victory.

In the second and final match of the day, the Yellow Jackets found themselves matched up against Dana College. Still fired up and confident from their earlier victory, Black Hills State was able to defeat the Vikings in three sets 25-13, 25-17, and 25-19. Consistent passing combined with Mandy Brumfield’s 26 assists powered the Yellow Jackets to their second win of the day.

The Lady Yellow Jackets will continued play Saturday in the second and final day of the Red Raider Classic in Orange City, Iowa. Black Hills State will face tough competition in (#11) Bellevue and (#16) Dordt as they look to pick up two more wins on the road.
