The Black Hills State University Women’s Golf Team is entering their 5th year of competition in the Dakota Athletic Conference. The Jackets are once again being led this year by former BHSU golfer Jaime Bentley, and assistant coach Ray Ginsbach. The BHSU women’s golf team is coming off its most successful season in which they won their first ever Dakota Athletic Conference Title, and their first appearance in the NAIA National Tournament. The team is looking forward to continuing the success they had last year, and to defend their conference title.
The Yellow Jackets will be looking for leadership from senior Katie Campbell and junior Katelynn Lamb, who are both coming off great campaigns in 2008-2009. Campbell is going into her senior season as the first four-year player in the programs history. “Katie brings experience and has been a part of the success we have had in the last few years. She is a great competitor and will be very valuable in the success of our team this year,” said Coach Bentley. Junior Katelynn Lamb enters the season after a very successful sophomore season in which she finished 3rd overall in the final DAC standings. Freshman Emily Chapman will also be a key returner to the Jackets this year. “Emily gained some valuable experience last year, and is looking forward to building on that experience and helping us improve throughout the year.” Coach Bentley commented.
Key additions to the 2009 team include Lead native Jenessa Rantapaa, Custer native Haley Davenport, and Cody, WY native Brandi Holmes. Rantapaa had a standout high school career at Lead High School as she played a key role in helping Lead/Deadwood High School win 5 state championships. Jenessa will play a key role in the success of the Yellow Jackets program throughout the next four years. Haley Davenport, also an incoming freshman, is coming off a great senior season for the Custer Wildcats, and will be a great competitor for the Jackets in years to come. Brandi Holmes joins the team after spending one year at the University of Wyoming as a redshirt freshman on the cowgirl’s golf team. Holmes is coming off a very successful summer playing in junior tournaments around the state of Wyoming.
The Yellow Jackets are looking forward to a great 2009-2010 season. They are looking to build upon the success of last season and repeat as DAC Champs and make it back to the National Tournament. Coach Bentley had this to say about the upcoming season, “I think we have a great team this year, we have experienced players returning who have had success in the past, and we have a great group of kids coming in who are looking forward to contributing to the program immediately. I am very excited about the season and think we have the chance to be one of the best teams in the conference this year.”
The Lady Jackets play a split season with tournaments in both the fall and the spring. The ladies open play on September 13th & 14th in Valley City, ND. The only home tournament of the year will be held at Spearfish Canyon Country Club on April 18th & 19th, 2010.
