The Yellow Jackets wrapped up their regular season play this week with wins over Jamestown College and Valley City State University. BHSU already won the Dakota Athletic Conference entering the week but knew that they needed to keep their momentum heading into the conference tournament. Entering the game the Yellow Jackets were ranked #5 in the NAIA.
Wednesday, the Yellow Jackets got off to a slow start turning the ball over 10 times in the first half. Sophomore Cain Atkinson’s half court shot at the end of the buzzer closed Jamestown’s lead to only three points at halftime. In the second half, the Yellow Jackets were more focused and were able turn a three point deficit into a 13 point lead. The Yellow Jackets shot 55% from the field and 53% from behind the arc to take the win 78-70. BHSU was led by sophomore Clay Pottorff with 20 points. Sophomore Luke Enos had 13 points and Cain Atkinson added 10 points.
Thursday, the Yellow Jackets traveled 30 minutes down the road for their final regular season game against Valley City State who was fresh off their victory over South Dakota School of Mines the night before. In the first half, the Yellow Jackets gained momentum early building their lead to as many as nine points but the Vikings came roaring back. With both teams not shooting well from the field, the Yellow Jackets only turned the ball over one time in the first half which helped them maintain a five point lead at halftime 28-23. In the second half Valley City outscored the Yellow Jackets by five to tie the game up and send it to overtime. “We had some key opportunities to close the game at the end of regulation and they were able to make plays to tie the game,” said Head Coach Paul Sather. In overtime, Cain Atkinson scored back to back baskets to give the Yellow Jackets an early advantage and they never looked back taking the game 75-70. BHSU was led by Cain Atkinson with 19 points. Luke Enos had 14 points and 12 rebounds and Clay Pottorff added 13 points on the evening. Sophomore Will John Johnson had 12 rebounds on the night as well.
The 24-4 Yellow Jackets will now enter the Dakota Athletic Conference tournament play this Sunday as they play host to the #8 seed Dakota State University. Game time will be at 4pm immediately following the women’s game at 2pm.
