The Yellow Jackets knew going into the game Thursday night that it was going to be a war. Both South Dakota School of Mines and Black Hills State University are off to great starts. The Hardrockers were 13-5, and the Yellow Jackets were 14-3 entering the game.
The Yellow Jackets were able to build a lead going into halftime behind strong guard play from sophomore Cain Atkinson who finished the first half with 12 points. At halftime the Yellow Jackets had the lead 33-22. In the second half, South Dakota School of Mines struck first going on a 14-2 run in the first five minutes. “It was a game of runs. We would make a run and get a lead then they would come right back,” said Head Coach Paul Sather. Eventually the Yellow Jackets were able to finish the game on a run taking the game 64-57. The Yellow Jackets were led by sophomore Luke Enos with 15 points. Cain Atkinson added 14 points. Sophomore Will John Johnson finished the evening with 14 rebounds.
The 15-3 Yellow Jackets will now travel to Division II Chadron State College Saturday for their last non-conference opponent. You can see the game live on pay per view through the Chadron State College website.
