The Yellow Jackets opened up pool play this past Tuesday in Sioux City, IA against #1 Fresno Pacific University in the NAIA National Championships.   “We knew going in that they would be similar to the NAU teams we have played in the past.  They have height, power, and experience,” said Head Coach Jhett Albers.  The Yellow Jackets struggled to return the strong jump serves from Fresno Pacific getting down early.  “We didn’t handle their serve very well in serve receive.  This made us struggle offensively and make us predictable,” added Coach Albers.  Fresno Pacific went on to take the match 3-0. The Yellow Jackets were led by sophomore Maggie O’Neill with 8 kills.  Junior Mandy Brumfield led the way in assists with 18.

Wednesday night, the Yellow Jackets got off to a great start against #12 Morningside College.  In the first game the Yellow Jackets were able to get on track behind junior middle hitter Kristin Engle who finished the match with 18 kills.  The Yellow Jackets took game one 25-22.  “We entered the ball much better off serve receive and defensively off our digs which allowed us to get the ball to Kristin Engle and Kayla Haines who both had great nights offensively,” said Coach Albers.  In the second game the Yellow Jacket again got off to a good start behind a strong defense and play at the net.  The score of game two was 25-19 Yellow Jackets.  In the third game the Yellow Jackets finished off the Mustangs taking the game 25-21 and the match 3-0. Maggie O’Neill added 11 kills.

With the win the 26-7 Yellow Jackets will now take on Point Loma Nazarene at 3:45PM CST today for the final round of pool play.  Black Hills State University and Point Loma Nazarene are tied in pool play action at 1-1.  Both teams have wins over Morningside College and losses to Fresno Pacific University.  This match will determine who will move on to the Championship round beginning Friday.  Please check the schedule for up-to-date scores.
