Going into the game Sunday the Yellow Jackets knew they would be facing a determined South Dakota School of Mines team. In the first meeting earlier in the season the Yellow Jackets defeated the Hardrockers in Spearfish 33-13. The Yellow Jackets entered the game 6-3 on the season.
In the first half, the Yellow Jackets had success early running the ball. “We made some critical mistakes with penalties and turnovers in the first half,” said Head Coach John Scott. The Yellow Jackets were only able to come away with 10 points through the first two quarters. The score at halftime was 10-3 in favor of the Yellow Jackets
In the second half, South Dakota Mines scored on their first two drives out of halftime to take the lead 17-10 setting the tone for an exciting finish. The Yellow Jackets bounced right back to tie the game at 17 on a rushing touchdown by sophomore Tanner Ehrlich. In the fourth quarter senior linebacker Tyler Tetrault stripped the ball away and took it 60 yards for a touchdown to give the Yellow Jackets the lead. After an unsuccessful try on the extra point the score was 23-17. “We made some mistakes in protection on the extra point and it got blocked,” added Coach Scott. South Dakota School of Mines then mounted a long drive capped off by a quarterback sneak to give the Hardrockers the advantage with only a minute remaining in the game 24-23. With the Yellow Jackets out of timeouts they drove the ball down the field for an attempt at a field goal to win the game. The Yellow Jackets were unable to get their kicking unit on the field and the game was over. “The final 18 seconds you wish we could have back. South Dakota Mines played with tremendous poise on the afternoon,” said Coach Scott. The final was 24-23 South Dakota Mines.
The Yellow Jackets will now give their players some time off until after Thanksgiving. “After Thanksgiving we will start preparing for winter drills,” added Coach Scott.
