The Black Hills State University cross country teams ran to runner-up finishes in the fourteen team field at the Mt. Marty Invitational on Saturday, October 25. The meet was hosted by the University of South Dakota and ran on the Don Baker course on the USD campus. 

The “Running Yellow Jacket” women were paced by strong finishes of JR, Wendy O’Lexey, Rock Springs, WY 5th, SR, Alicia Verhulst, Ralph, SD, 7th and JR Shelli Scheffler,  Lovell, WY 10th. Rounding out the top five scorers were FR, Leigh Anne Whiteside, Loveland, CO who placed 24th with a personal best time of 19:42.53 and JR, Katie Cook, Cheyenne, WY 35th. There were 157 runners in the race.

The men were led by the first place finish of Cody Bordewyk, Livermore, CO who won a thrilling race by out kicking Luka Thor from Concordia by .69 seconds. It was the third race won by Bordewyk this fall. Also placing in the top 20 in the field of 142 runners were JR, Mark Mazza, Cheyenne, WY (Central) 7th, JR, Birch Haraden, Billings, MT (Skyview) 18th and FR, Jed Morgan, Loveland, CO 19th. Rounding out the scoring for the “Running Yellow Jackets” was JR KC Fielder, George, IA who placed 24. There were fifteen teams in the men’s field. By placing second in both divisions, Black Hills State University won the combined team finish.  Complete results can be found on the BHSU cross country web site under schedule and results.

The next competition for “The Running Yellow Jackets” is the Dakota Athletic Conference Meet which will be held on Saturday, November 8. The winning team automatically qualifies for the NAIA National Meet which will be held in Kenosha, WI on November 22.
