The Yellow Jackets made the trip up HWY 85 this past Saturday looking to build on their four game winning streak. Dickinson State also had a streak going winning their last three conference games. From kickoff the Blue Hawks took the momentum early building a 16 point lead going into halftime. The Yellow Jackets would hold Dickinson to 16 points for the rest of the game but could only account for one late score to make the final 16-6 in favor of the Blue Hawks.
The Dickinson State defense kept the Yellow Jacket offense off kilter all game. Unable to get the running game going the Jackets went to the air, but pressure on the quarterback and breakdowns prevented the passing game from getting on track except for a late score in the waning seconds. Although the passing game managed over 200 yards it was the lack of a running game that stood out. Sophomore running back Tanner Ehrlich came into the game Saturday averaging 140 rushing yards per game. Saturday Dickinson State was able to hold Ehrlich to only 48 yards. “Our offensive success is nurtured by our ground attack – the passing game is important, but it has always been set up by an effective run game” said Head Coach John Scott. Junior wide receiver Corey Wheeler had six catches for 108 yards and one touchdown on the afternoon.
The Blue Hawks offense was effective in keeping the Yellow Jackets defense off balance. A good combination of running and passing enabled Dickinson to maintain field position throughout the contest. Dickinson made good on scoring every time they entered Yellow Jacket territory coming up with three field goals and a long touchdown pass.
“We left our game at home. Dickinson is playing at a great level right now and we couldn’t match their physical play, emotion, or intensity. They were more than ready for us on Saturday” added Coach Scott. With the loss the Yellow Jackets fall to 5-2 (3-1 DAC) and are tied for second place in the DAC Conference. This weekend they will return home to take on Minot State University at 1:00 PM MST in Lyle Hare Stadium.
