Coming into Saturday’s game the Yellow Jackets knew they were not only going to deal with Valley City State but also the winter weather conditions as well. BHSU entered the game 4-1 (2-0 DAC) looking to continue their momentum at home.
In the first half the Yellow Jackets started out quick behind a 65 yard run from sophomore running back Tanner Ehrlich to take an early 14-0 lead looking to run away with the game. Valley City State would come right back to score behind senior quarterback Jason Bielke and senior wide receiver Chauncey Calhoun who accounted for just over 370 yards in the Viking passing game Saturday. The Yellow Jackets would add two more touchdowns in the first half to make the halftime score 27-14 BHSU.
In the third quarter Valley City State accounted for the only score in the quarter tightening the game to 27-21. In the fourth quarter the game became a shootout as BHSU would score 13 more points and the Vikings would add 14 points. In the end Bielke had a chance with the ball but the Yellow Jacket defense stood their ground to make the final 40-35 Black Hills State University.
BHSU was led by Tanner Ehrlich who had 18 carries for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Sophomore quarterback Drew Hodgs went 12 for 25 with 188 yard three touchdowns and two interceptions on the afternoon. In the receiving game senior Jamie January and junior Corey Wheeler accounted for six catches for 144 yards and two touchdowns. The Vikings were led by wide Receiver Chauncey Calhoun with 149 all purpose yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Jason Beilke threw for four touchdowns as well.
“It feels good to have gotten off to a 3-0 conference start, but now we have to take it up a notch” said Head Coach John Scott.
