The men’s and women’s cross country teams opened the 2008 season at home with two impressive wins. The Running Yellow Jacket women swept the first three places and placed all five scoring individuals in the top six to win the team title. Wendy O’Lexey, Rock Springs, WY, led Alicia Verhulst, Ralph, SD, and Kerry Nekuda, Cheyenne, WY, across the line winning the 4 kilometer race in 16:05. Katie Cook, Cheyenne, WY, and Shelli Scheffler, Lovell, WY, placed fifth and sixth respectively. Leigh Anne Whiteside, Loveland, CO, began her Yellow Jacket career in impressive fashion with a twelfth place finish in the field of fifty-two runners. Concordia Moorhead placed second with Hailey Brenden leading the way with a fourth place finish.
For the men, Cody Bordewyk, Livermore, CO, won the individual title in a time of 20:19 over the six kilometer course. Mark Mazza, Cheyenne, WY, Birch Haraden, Billings, MT, and Neil Long, Fort Collins, CO, placed fourth through sixth respectively giving the Yellow Jackets four of the top five places. In the field of sixty-seven runners, KC Fiedler, George, IA, and freshman Jed Morgan, Loveland, CO, placed eighth and ninth individually.
