This past Saturday the Yellow Jackets came into the game fresh off their victory against Southwest Minnesota State University the week before. In the first quarter the Yellow Jackets came out with the energy dominating offensively and defensively. “We had a great first quarter but only came away with a seven point lead. The next three quarters were dominated by their defensive line and a play-making quarterback. Those two factors together were the reason why we only ran 41 plays the entire game” said Head Coach John Scott. Barefield’s ability to improvise and his elusiveness allowed the Rangers to convert on a number of third down opportunities.  "We didn't have the same focus we had the week before. You have to have equal amounts of physical and mental aspects of the game. We had great effort but not the focus. We aren't a good enough team to rely on just our effort" according to Coach Scott.

“Offensively our ground game didn’t provide us with some of the opportunities it usually does. We had a number of assignment breakdowns and we never really got on track.  The field conditions didn’t really have an effect but it felt like we were running in sand all day.” Added Coach Scott.   The Yellow Jackets had an opportunity late in the game to go ahead but failed to convert on third down.

Defensively the Yellow Jackets were able to keep the Rangers out of the end zone but allowed many opportunities to convert on third down. “We had some assignment breakdowns on the defensive side as well that were crucial in third down conversions and allowing their quarterback to get loose.” said Coach Scott.

Special Teams showed improvement from week one but will still focus this week on continuing to get better.  The focus this week will be on kickoff return as they try to get ready for the Hardrockers of South Dakota Mines.

This week’s game is Swarm Days and kickoff will be at 1:00pm in Lyle Hare Stadium. If you aren’t able to make it to the game then you can see it live on the BHSU Athletics Website through pay per view.
