Going into the game the jackets wanted to be competitive and have a solid performance over the course of sixty minutes. “The sixty minutes of effort put us in the position to win the game in the final seconds of the fourth quarter. Our intensity really stood out and allowed us to play at the level we needed to play at against a real quality team” said Head Coach John Scott. In the six years with Coach Scott this is the first time that the Jackets have won their season opener.
Offensively the Jackets had only one turnover which played a major key in the win on a rainy day. The Jackets were led by a very solid running game where sophomore running back Tanner Ehrlich carried the ball 25 times for 122 yards. The running game opened up some passing opportunities with sophomore quarterback Drew Hodgs who through for 212 yards and two touchdowns. Junior Corey Wheeler and senior Jamie January combined for 9 catches totaling 190 yards and two touchdowns. January’s game winning catch with only seconds remaining gave the Yellow Jackets the win 21-14.
Defensively the Yellow Jackets showed signs of the past by swarming around the ball all afternoon. “Defensively we didn’t give up a big play the entire game. We did a great job getting around guys to hold an offense to only 14 points” added Coach Scott. Southwest Minnesota State had 55 points in their win the week before. The Yellow Jacket defense held the Mustangs offense to only 192 total yards.
“We weren’t pretty on special teams and were fortunate that we didn’t give up a big play. We were able to control the damage to make it through the game. We have to continue to improve on special teams and it is encouraging to see how much better we can get in the special teams area” said Coach Scott. The special teams unit is full of young players gaining experience week to week.
