The Lady Yellow Jackets are getting ready to open their 2008 season against Doane College, Northwestern College, Concordia, and Dordt College at the Red Raider Classic in Orange City, Iowa. “We are hoping to continue to improve on last season’s performance and make a run for the Dakota Athletic Conference Championship” said Coach Albers. The Yellow Jackets in 2007 finished 22-5 (11-3 in DAC) earning them a second place finish in the conference.
This year’s team will feature 1st Team All-Conference, 1st Team All-Region, and Honorable Mention All-American junior Kristin Engle from Newcastle, Wyoming. “Kristin led the conference in blocks per game and our team in kills per game and hitting percentage. We are going to need her to repeat that performance again this year to achieve our goals” added Coach Albers. Also returning in 2008 is junior setter Mandy Brumfield who was 2nd Team All-Conference and among one of the best setters in the region. The Yellow Jackets also return Dakota Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year Maggie O’Neill who impressed the conference with her power and consistency throughout the 2007 season. O’Neill also earned 2nd Team All-Conference. “We will look to the leadership and contributions of Engle, Brumfield, and O’Neill for this upcoming season” added Coach Albers. Other returning starters include Carinna Sweet from Rawlins, Wyoming and the only senior on the 2008 roster Annie Grim from Gregory, South Dakota. Other players Coach Albers is counting on contributing in 2008 are junior Kayla Haines from Mitchell, South Dakota and sophomore Kalin Engle from Newcastle, Wyoming.
New additions to the Yellow Jacket squad that are expected to make an immediate impact include freshman Ashley Wilkinson from Colorado Springs, Colorado, freshman Brianna Gradishar from Aurora, Colorado, and freshman Katie Malin from Sheridan, Wyoming.
“We will be tested early by nationally ranked teams from the Great Plains Athletic Conference prior to the start of our conference schedule. We hope that these challenging road games will prepare us for the stretch run in the conference” said Coach Albers. The Yellow Jackets will be on the road for most of September but will return for their home opener on September 26th against Jamestown College at 7:00pm.
