After a wet spring and a day postponement the sun came through to help the Jackets conclude their 2008 spring. The scrimmage Sunday was followed by a barbecue at Salem Park where the football staff announced their winter weight training and conditioning awards.
At the scrimmage the offense pulled out the win with a six yard touchdown run by sophomore quarterback Drew Hodgs. The final was 56-52 going to the offense. The offense was led by a solid running game. Sophomore running back Tanner Ehrlich led the way with 69 yards on 12 carries, sophomore Mike Jager had 47 yards, and sophomore Willie Padilla added 35 yards and one touchdown. The receivers were led by junior Corey Wheeler with six catches for 58 yards, senior transfer Jaime January had four catches and one touchdown, and senior Justin Kloppel added two catches and a touchdown. Returning quarterback Drew Hodgs was 12-22 for 95 yards and a touchdown. Freshman red-shirt Duane Aamot added a touchdown as well.
Defensively as expected the linebackers stood out like they have all spring. The defensive backfield showed strong play as well throughout the scrimmage. Senior Josh Fundis led the defense with six tackles. All Conference junior Wacey Coleman had five tackles and two sacks. Transfer junior linebacker Nick Prather had a pair of tackles, a recovered fumble for a touchdown, and one interception. Defensive backs junior Duane Brown and senior Dustin Dooley each had four tackles.
At the barbecue sixteen Yellow Jackets earned recognition for weight room achievements this past winter. Seven players (Schleusner, Neiman, Fundis, Kloppel, January, Boeding, and Beehler) were also recognized for breaking team weight room records. The Jackets will open their season on September 6th against NCAA Division II Southwest Minnesota State. Their home opener will be on September 13th against Northwestern Oklahoma.
Go Yellow Jackets!
