Community Based Programs

Black Hills State University is home to many community based programs. BHSU understands that importance of having a college be a positive force in bettering the community. Many of the programs are geared towards bettering youth in the Spearfish area.

Upward Bound

Upward BoundUpward Bound’s purpose is to assist eligible students develop a positive attitude toward learning, graduating from high school, and prepare for and enroll in a postsecondary educational institution. BHSU has hosted Upward Bound since 1968, allowing the program the use of the academic, recreational, and dorm facilities.

Teammates

TeammatesTeammates is a mentorship program that links K-12 students in our community with BHSU education majors. The criteria for child-selection may include children with only one parent at home, children who have difficulty making friends, children whose parents are going through a divorce, etc. These children are chosen by school counselors based on recommendations from teachers and parents.
