Dr. Theisz awarded a Sasakawa Fellowship -
Top
|
Dr. R. D. Theisz, chairman of the department of humanities, has been
awarded a Sasakawa Fellowship by The American Association of State
Colleges and Universities.
|
The fellowship will support his participation
in the National Faculty Development Institute on "Incorporating
Japanese Studies in the Undergraduate Curriculum," to be held at
San Diego State University from June 3-28.

Spearfish
middle school student shadows BHSU volcanologist - Top

Shadowed—Spearfish middle school student Travis
Trautman spent a day on the Black Hills State University campus recently
learning about volcanoes and what a volcanologist does during a regular
work day.
The Spearfish seventh grader, one of many students
participating in the middle school’s “Take Charge” program,
followed Dr. Steven Anderson, professor of geology and volcanology at
Black Hills State, during a day of teaching and research.
Trautman said,
“I’ve always really liked volcanoes and then I saw a movie about
them. I was always fascinated about them.” Anderson let Trautman
attend one of his geology classes, showed him a video on volcanoes, and
explained volcanic activity on Venus through computer imaging. The
youngster said
|
Anderson told him he would have to get good
grades in
school and would need about nine years of higher education to become a volcanologist. “I’m willing to do that, “ said the
seventh grader, as he stared intently at the professor’s computer and
manipulated the graphic volcanic display.

Meetings for prospective student teachers set - Top

The Black Hills State University College of
Education, office of field experiences, is holding mandatory
registration/orientation meetings for BHSU students planning to student
teach during the summer or fall of 2002.
|
Students must attend one of the following
meetings: Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 7 a.m. in Jonas Hall room 202;
Wednesday, Jan. 23 at 3 p.m. in Jonas Hall room 309; or Thursday, Jan.

Music department presents trumpet recital

The Black Hills State University music department will present a trumpet
recital, ‘Mostly’ Jazz, Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 7:30 p.m. in Woodburn
Auditorium. The concert is open to the public at no
charge.
The concert will feature music instructor Christopher Hahn on trumpet.
Music department professors Dr. Janeen Larsen and Dr. Randall Royer will
also be featured, along with students Carol Reausaw and Andrea Fischer.

The recital will include jazz and music that is influenced by jazz.
According to Hahn, “there is
a solo trumpet homage to jazz trumpeters Louis Armstrong, Clifford
Brown, Miles Davis, and Dizzy Gillespie titled “I
Remember…,” a French concerto for trumpet, mainstream jazz, and a
pair of spirituals for trumpet and soprano. It’s quite a varied
program, but all of the music has jazz elements or helped contribute to
the development of jazz.”

Scholarship guarantee available at BHSU

High
school seniors are guaranteed a renewable scholarship at Black Hills
State University provided they are in the top one-third of their class
and have an ACT composite score of 21 or above.
According to Steve Ochsner, dean of the BHSU Enrollment Services,
the guaranteed renewable scholarship program has been available for the
past several years to high school seniors or first-time freshmen who
plan to attend BHSU. The scholarship plan guarantees first-time
freshmen, who are in the top third of the their high school class with
an ACT composite score of 21or higher, a minimum one-quarter (1/4)
in-state scholarship.
The enrollment dean noted that the quarter scholarship is a
guaranteed minimum; students with a higher ACT score and a higher-class
rank may receive a larger scholarship. Guaranteed renewable scholarships
may be
|
from one half to full
in-state tuition scholarships. Scholarships are renewable provided
students maintain appropriate grade-point standards and carry an
approved number of credit hours.
In
order to be eligible for the guaranteed renewable scholarship program
first-time freshmen must apply by Feb. 15, 2002. A scholarship
application and complete listing of all BHSU scholarships is available
online at www.bhsu.edu (click on prospective
students/enrollment/scholarships). One scholarship application is
sufficient for all BHSU scholarships.

BHSU students plan spring break service
project - Top

Ten Black Hills State University students will be
spending their spring break building houses for Habitat For Humanity
International in Norman, Okla. The project is part of Habitat For
Humanity’s Collegiate Challenge program, the country’s largest
alternative break program for high school and college students.
This year BHSU students will be joining thousands of other
students from across the country who work to eliminate poverty housing
by building decent and affordable houses for people in need.
The houses are then sold to homeowners at no profit, using
no-interest loans.
The BHSU Career Center is organizing the service
trip. The students,
along with two members of the career center staff, will be driving two
school vans for the 16-hour trip to Oklahoma.
While there, the group will spend their days traveling to
different construction sites to help with the rebuilding efforts after
the devastating effects of a tornado in the area.
Students team up with the homeowners and trained construction
supervisors to rebuild, repair and paint the homes.
Students participating in the project are expected
to pay for all building supplies and transportation costs involved in
the trip. For the BHSU
students, the total amount of the trip exceeds $3,500.
In order to defer some of the costs of the trip, the group has
planned several fundraisers, including raffling off
“Romantic Weekend Getaways” to a faculty or staff members.
The group has also received generous contributions from the

Super Bowl raffle ticket sales will be held
Jan. 22 & 23 at 11
a.m.-1 p.m. in the BHSU Student Union Lobby
and Jan. 24 at 10 a.m.-3 p.m.
in the BHSU Student Union Jacket Legacy Room. Tickets are also
available by contacting Heather or Sarah at 642-6277.
A bake sale will be held Jan. 22 and 23
from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Student Union Lobby
and again Jan. 24 at 10 a.m. to 3
p.m. in the Student Union Jacket Legacy Room.
During the same times, the group will be taking orders for Valentine’s Day
flower delivery.
A spaghetti feed will be held Jan. 27th
from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the United Methodist Church,
located at 845 5th Street in Spearfish.
A Craft Sale is
scheduled for Jan. 29, 30 and 31
from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in
the Student
Union Lobby.
Raffle tickets for a “Romantic Weekend Getaway”
will be on-sale from February 19-28
in the BHSU Career Center.

Investment
speaker will speak at class - Top

Terry Nelson of Dain Rauscher, Inc., will present a
crash course on investing with very little money or knowledge on
Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 3:20 p.m. in the Student Union Jacket Legacy Room.
The class is open to the public. Nelson will give a
simple introduction of the terminology of investing and then explain how
to develop wealth. Nelson
will also address the minimum
|
dollar amount to start Roth IRA’s, mid cap vs. large cap, how to
invest for your children’s education, commodity investment, and the
advantages and disadvantages of investing in preferred stock.

The Eighth Annual Hot Chocolate Days Art Walk
will be held Feb. 14 through Feb. 17 in downtown Spearfish.
Hot Chocolate Days Art Walk features a variety of art by
regional artisans displayed in Spearfish businesses.
The public is invited to stroll through the businesses, view
the art and sip hot chocolate.
The walk is a growing event involving more than
50 businesses and artists. Past
art mediums have included oils, acrylics, watercolor, pottery, wood
and bronze sculptures, photography, ink and graphite drawings,
ceramics, miniatures and quilts.

To witness masterpieces in progress, visit with
the artists in residence at the old City Hall on 722 Main St.,
Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday from
10:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Hot Chocolate Days Art Walk is held in conjunction

Instructional improvement
grants available - Top

The Instructional Improvement Committee (IIC)
encourages, through monetary grants, the application of existing
knowledge to specific teaching situations to improve the quality of
instruction at BHSU.
Any
full-time faculty member, full-time adjunct faculty, or other full-time staff member engaged in student instruction may apply for grant
funds administered by the committee.
Grant funding will normally be available up to a maximum of
$1,000 per project. Priority will be given to projects that will
have a broad-based, visible, continuing impact of instruction across
faculty members and/or disciplines. Funds are available for
development of materials and methods to improve teaching and
learning, equipment to enhance teaching and learning, travel to
conferences or workshops which enhance teaching and learning, and
bringing consulting lecturers and teaching specialists to campus to
offer presentations to and/or with faculty and teaching-support
staff at BHSU.
|
Faculty
members who apply for grants to support travel to a conference or
workshop are limited to receiving no more than one grant every three
years. In the other
categories, priority will be given to those who have not received an
IIC grant in the last academic year.
Proposals for grant funding
will be reviewed by the IIC on a monthly basis. The deadline for
submission will be the last Friday of each month; a decision will be
made as soon as practicable on each proposal.
Eleven copies of the proposals should be submitted to the
grants and special projects office in Woodburn 218, or to the chair
of the committee, Sharon Strand. Proposals will consist of the
proposal and budget outlines following the specified format
available at the grants and special projects web
page.

Faculty research funds available -

The faculty-research committee has funds available for the current
fiscal year. Write a short (about three-page) proposal. Proposal
forms are available at the grants office or can be printed out from
their webpage.
It is anticipated that successful applicants will request support
for faculty release time, research equipment, travel to research
sites or research support for the production of creative work.
Preference is given to new applicants,
|
particularly in the areas of
education, business, social sciences and humanities. The next application deadline is
Jan. 18 at 2 p.m.
The applicants are encouraged to contact the committee members
for advice prior to completing their proposals. The members are John
Alsup, Steve Anderson, Lyle Cook, Tom Cox, Abdollah Farrokhi, chair;
Jim Hess, Kathleen Parrow, Shane Sarver, and Rob Schurrer.
