Submit names of all volunteers- Top  

Please submit to the president's office the names and addresses of any volunteers who will be working in your area.

  The names will be forwarded to the South Dakota Board of Regents.

 

In case a volunteer would be injured in the performance of volunteer work, they will be covered by Workmen's Compensation similar to any employee of the university. In addition, the university can justify expenditures which are made in connection with their contributions if they are identified with volunteer status.

Career Services hosts human services job fair-Top  

Career Services at Black Hills State University will be hosting a Human Services Non-profit Organizations Opportunity Job Fair, Thursday, Jan. 18 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Student Union Legacy Room.

  According to Bob Stanelle, student development director, “The fair offers BHSU students an opportunity to meet with human services/non-profit employers about positions with their organizations.”

  “Our overview is to create positive relationships with the community,” he said. “We want to make them aware of what we have to offer.”

  The student development director believes this type of fair is unique in that it focuses on people who essentially work in the social science areas. Employers from this genre are looking for people interested in full-time work, part-time work, internships and volunteering. This represents a wide variety of opportunities for job seekers and at the same time lets employers gage interest in their particular organization.

The fair is open to the public. Registration at the door will be for attendance door prizes to be awarded at the end of the day.

 

Participants must attend the fair to win a prize, but do not have to be present at the drawing.

Organizations present include: Americorps, Banner Health, Black Hills Arthritis Association, Black Hills Workshops, Boy Scouts (Black Hills Area), Chamberlain Academy, Children's Home Society, City-County Alcohol & Drug Programs, Diocese of Rapid City (Office of Vocations), Ellsworth Air Force Base, Girl Scouts (Black Hills), Innovative Home Health and Staffing, Lawrence County Housing, Northern Hills Alcohol & Drug Services, Northern Hills CASA Program, Northern Hills Training Center, Pennington Co. Sarver presents at international lobster conference - Top  

Shane Sarver, associate professor of biology at Black Hills State University, recently co-authored a paper presented at the International Lobster Conference and Workshop at Key West, Fl.

The title of the paper was "Molecular Phylogeny of the Spiny Lobster Genus Panulirus (Decapoda:  Palinuriadae)." Co-authors on the research paper were Dr. Margaret Ptacek and Michael Childress of Idaho State University.

Spiny lobsters in the genus Panulirus include 19 described species that are found in all tropical and subtropical oceans. Thus, the biggest challenge for the researchers was to obtain samples. Researchers from all over the world assisted Sarver, Ptacek and Childress by sending samples for use in their project.

Some of the more challenging samples to obtain include P. pascuensis, found only in the waters near Easter Island, P. regius, found in waters near the west coast of Africa, P. marginatus only found in the waters near Hawaii and P. stimpsoni found only in the South China Sea.

This project used DNA sequence analysis of two mitochondrial genes to examine the evolutionary relationships of the 19 species of spiny lobsters. Sarver provided data from the 16S gene, which resolved old evolutionary branches, and Childress and Ptacek provided data from the cytochrome oxidase gene, which resolved more recent evolutionary branches.

Sarver joined the Black Hills State University science faculty in 1996. He earned his Ph.D. in zoology at Louisiana State University in 1993.

BHSU receives another $5,000 for Mikkelsen scholarship endowment fund - Top  

The E. C. Mikkelsen Scholarship at Black Hills State University recently received a second $5,000 gift bringing the endowment to $40,000.

The first $5,000 gift, received in December, was from an anonymous donor. The second gift contribution, received in January, was given by Fred Alleman of Boise, Idaho, who established the scholarship fund in 1999 as a way of honoring his former high school math teacher and Spearfish High School principal E. C. Mikkelsen. Alleman credited Mikkelsen with giving him the encouragement and confidence to succeed in life.

 Alleman is an aeronautical engineer and retired Lt. Colonel. He initiated the endowment with a $5,000 gift.

The scholarship criteria Alleman set for the E. C. Mikkelsen Scholarship is for a BHSU student majoring in either math, business, education or computers, who maintains a minimum 2.0 grade-point average, and is a resident of western South Dakota.

E.C. Mikkelsen is retired and living in Pierre.

 

American Business Women support BHSU scholarships- Top  

The Northern Black Hills Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association is taking applications for scholarships.

The scholarships are for female students at Black Hills State University and Spearfish High School seniors who are planning to attend BHSU during the fall 2001-2002 spring semesters. A total of four $600 scholarships are available with distribution of $300 for each semester.

Applications may be obtained at the BHSU Enrollment Center and the Spearfish High School guidance office.

Application deadline is Feb. 28, 2001.

ABWA scholarships are made available each year through the ABWA annual STRUT fundraiser. This relay race is sponsored each fall by area businesses that contribute money, teams, and prizes to raise dollars for scholarships. CSA council minutes for the Dec. 12 meeting- Top  

The CSA council met Dec. 12, 2000, at the Pangburn Dining Room. 

Present were Corinne Hansen, Lynette Long, Cheri Leahy, Ellen Melaragno, Sherry Albert, Linda Allbee, Krista Schroeder, Ginny Sunding, Rebecca Dovre, Eileen Thomas, Marilyn Luscombe, Gloria Spitler, Nancy Schuck, Becky Haak, Carolyn Skallerud and Gerry Pabst.

Not present  Myron Sullivan, Margaret Kleinsasser and Deatta Chapel.

President Hansen called the meeting to order.  Minutes of the meeting were read and approved, motion by Eileen, second by Ellen.

Treasurer’s report was presented by Marilyn Luscombe.  Motion to accept made by Gloria, seconded by Ginny.

Committee Reports

Safety & Facilities:  No report from the meeting.  Per last month’s discussion, equipment needing repair has been scheduled for service.  A rubber mat has been placed at the south entrance to Woodburn.  Safety strips will be installed in milder weather.

Strategic Planning:  Ginny Sunding gave a lengthy report on the meetings held Nov. 9, 16 and Dec. 7.  Minutes are attached and available for review. 

Old Business 

United Ministries Food Drive:  Corinne will prepare a flyer to be posted in offices.  Food and cash will be collected in each building for six weeks, through January.  CSA members from each building will be responsible for collection and delivery to Legia Spicer.

New Business

The winter social is set for January 26 prior to the women’s and men’s basketball games.  Ginny will check with Dr. Flickema to see if he will donate the main dish, which will likely be chili prepared by dining services.  At the January meeting, a committee will be assigned  to organize the food and prizes.

Officers will be elected and committee assignments will be made at the January meeting which is scheduled for Jan. 16, 2001, 9 a.m., Pangburn Dining Room.

IIC committee grants available

The Instructional Improvement Committee (IIC) encourages, through monetary grants, the application of existing knowledge to specific teaching situations to improve the quality of instruction at BHSU. 

Any full time faculty member, full time adjunct faculty or other full time staff member engaged in student instruction may apply for grant funds administered by the committee.  Grant funding will normally be available up to a maximum of $1,000 per project. Priority will be given to projects that will have a broad-based, visible, continuing impact of instruction across faculty members and/or disciplines. Funds are available for development of materials and methods to improve teaching and learning, equipment to enhance teaching and learning, travel to conferences or workshops which enhance  teaching and learning, and bringing consulting lecturers and teaching specialists 

to campus to offer presentations to and/or with faculty and teaching-support staff at BHSU. Faculty members who apply for grants to support travel to a conference or workshop are limited to receiving no more than one grant every three years.  In the other categories, priority will be given to those who have not received an IIC grant in the last academic year. 

Proposals for grant funding will be reviewed by the IIC on a monthly basis. The deadline for submission will be the third Monday of each month; a decision will be made as soon as practicable on each proposal.  Ten copies of the proposals should be submitted to the grants and special projects office in  Woodburn 220, or to the chair of the committee, Sharon Strand. Proposals will consist of the proposal and budget outlines following the specified format available at the grants and special projects web page.

Faculty research funds available - Top  

The faculty-research committee has funds available for the current fiscal year. Write a short (about three-page) proposal. Proposal forms are available at the grants office or can be printed out from their webpage.

It is anticipated that successful applicants will request support for faculty release time, research equipment, travel to research sites or research support for the production of creative work. Preference is given to new applicants, particularly in the areas of education, business, social sciences and humanities. A three-hour release time is available for fall of 2001. You can apply now

The applicants are encouraged to contact the committee members for advice prior to completing their proposals. The members are John Alsup, Steve Anderson, Lyle Cook, Tom Cox,  Abdollah Farrokhi, chair; Jim Hess, Kathleen Parrow, Shane Sarver and Rob Schurrer.

The research committee will not provide salary. The committee may approve payment to student or non-student research assistants. Deliver the original plus ten copies of your proposal to the grants office in Woodburn 218 or Dr. Farrokhi’s office in Woodburn 314.

  • National Science Foundation.  Research on Learning and Education.  Awards range from $100,000 to $1,800,000.  Preliminary proposals due March 1 and September 1; full proposals due June 1 and December 1.

 

  • National Science Foundation.  MPS Internships in Public Science Education (MPS-IPSE).  IPSE is intended to bring recent science research results from MPS disciplines to the public by promoting partnerships between the MPS research community and specialists in public science education.  Approximately $1 million in funding available.  Deadline April 2, 2001.

 

  •   National Council for the Social Studies.  Grant for the Enhancement of Geographic Literacy.  PURPOSE:  To promote geography education in the schools; to enhance the geographic literacy of students at the classroom, district or statewide level; and to encourage the integration of geography into the social studies curriculum/classroom.
