to perform at Borders - Top
Scott
Simpson, assistant professor of education at
Black Hills State University, will give a CD
release performance at Borders in Rapid City
Saturday, Feb. 19 from 7 to 9 p.m. His recording,
Ozzie's Guitar, is original acoustic folk music.

Regents adopt
special resolution to honor employees - Top
The South Dakota Board of Regents adopted this
special resolution at their January meeting
extending their thanks and appreciation to the
employees on campus who made the new millennium a
non-event.

opportunities - Top
|
| A representative
from Tom Daschle's office will be on campus Feb.
23 to provide information and interview
applicants for Internships. An information
table will be in the Student Union Lobby from 9
a.m. to noon and afternoon interviews may be
scheduled with career services office.

The South Dakota
B-I-G Job Fair will be in Sioux Falls on Feb. 22.
More than 100 businesses will be participating. Employers
will be prepared to meet with candidates about
internships and career opportunities. Check the

provide tax assistance - Top
Accounting students at Black Hills State
University will be available to help area
residents with income tax preparation assistance
through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance
Program (VITA).

Dakota
Chamber Orchestra established - Top
The Dakota Chamber Orchestra has been
established in residence at Black Hills State
University. A premier performance for this group
is scheduled for April 28 at 7:30 p.m. at the
Matthews Opera House in Spearfish.
The Dakota Chamber Orchestra was formed to
provide an opportunity for personal development
of musicians through performance of works of the
master composers of orchestra music while
providing the campus of BHSU and the people of
the Black Hills region with additional cultural
opportunities.
Rehearsals for the chamber orchestra are set
for Tuesdays from 7-9 p.m. in Cook Hall room 204
on the BHSU campus. The schedule of regular
rehearsals is Feb. 15, Feb. 22, Feb. 29, March
14, March 21, March 28, April 4, April 11, April
18 and April 25. There will be a dress rehearsal
Thursday, April 27 at 7 p.m. at Matthews Opera
House.

The Black Hills State University theater
department will present Into the
Woods by Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine
in Woodburn Auditorium Feb. 24-26 at 8 p.m., and
a Feb. 27 matinee at 2:30 p.m.

management and marketing seminar scheduled -

The Center for Business and Entrepreneurship
at Black Hills State University will host two
workshops "Organization Risk
Management" and "The Role of Marketing
in Your Organization" Friday, Feb. 18 at the
Bell Steak House in Spearfish.

Wellness
fair scheduled at BHSU - Top
|
| Along with spring
cleaning it's time to get a clean bill of health
for summertime activities. A good place to start,
if you haven't had a recent physical by your
family physician, is at the second annual
Northern Hills Wellness Fair on the Black Hills
State University campus Wednesday, April 5. The
wellness fair will be held from noon to 7 p.m. at
the Donald E. Young Sports and Fitness Center and
is open to the public. The fair, composed mainly
of health-care providers, will provide free or
at-cost wellness screenings which include, but
are not limited to: glucose, blood pressure, body
fat, cholesterol, flexibility and balance,
vision, and hematocrit tests. It's
|
important to know
the numbers from these kinds of tests for good
health and wellness. Local health-care
providers will be available to discuss and answer
questions, discuss job opportunities in health
care, and answer questions on a variety of
health-related topics.
Other booths will offer educational
information and demonstrations. Many will offer
freebies and door prizes. Entertainment will also
be provided.

Crackerbarrel
scheduled for Saturday - Top
|
| The Spearfish Area
Chamber of Commerce government affairs committee
will host a Legislative Crackerbarrel Saturday,
Feb. 19 at the Spearfish Chamber of Commerce, 106
W. Kansas, at 10 a.m. District 31 legislators
Sen. James Dunn, Rep. Mark Young, and Rep. Jerry
Apa have been invited to participate in the
crackerbarrel. Crackerbarrels are held to provide
the public an opportunity to visit with local
legislators and become more
|
informed on
political issues facing the state. Following the
opening remarks by featured legislators, the
public will have the opportunity to ask questions
and make comments on legislative issues. The
crackerbarrel is open to the public. For more

Spring film festival
announced - Top
The schedule for the spring film festival at
Black Hills State University has been announced.
The films will be shown at 7 p.m. in Jonas 305 on
five Thursdays - Feb. 17, Feb. 24, March 16,
March 23 and March 30.

Chamber of commerce hosts
hot chocolate days art walk - Top
|
| This year marks the
fourth annual hot chocolate days art walk
sponsored by the Spearfish Area Chamber of
Commerce city wide retail trade committee. Beginning
Feb. 17 and running through Feb. 20 participants
can view local art on display in participating
businesses throughout the city of Spearfish. A
brochure listing these "temporary
galleries" and featured artists will be
available at the Spearfish Chamber of Commerce
and at all participating businesses. Participants
who visit the businesses and receive a special
stamp at each will be entered in a drawing for
Spearfish bucks donated by First
|
Western Bank,
Norwest Bank, Pioneer Bank and Trust and Rushmore
Bank and Trust. Gold winners (who visit 30 or
more) will be put in a drawing for $100, silver
winners who visit 20 or more will be put in a
drawing for $50, and bronze winners who visit 10
more will be put in a drawing for $25.

Instructional
improvement committee taking applications for
course releases - Top
|
| The instructional
improvement committee is ready to receive
applications for course releases for the
2000-2001 school year. Course releases are
available to any full-time faculty member with
the approval of his/her dean and department
chair. Course releases will be for one semester
during the regular academic year. Consideration
will be given for summer stipends for faculty
unable to apply for a course release for the
regular academic year because of documented
departmental staffing problems.
Course releases may be granted to:
- design a new course which will be infused
with technology or offered through the
internet;
- redesign an existing course so that it is
infused with technology or offered for
internet delivery;
|
- design a new course or redesign an
existing course to be presented
collaboratively with other BHSU faculty;
- significantly redesign an existing
course; or
- design a new course.
Proposals for course releases will be reviewed
by the instructional improvement committee in
March so that the recommendations may be made and
approved by April. Proposals should be submitted
to the grants and special projects office,
Woodburn 220, by the last Friday in February, and
will consist of a proposal following the
specified format. A copy of the guidelines and
proposal format are available from the grants
office web page or by contacting your dean or
department chair for a hard copy. Ten copies of
the proposal are needed so that each member of
the IIC can review it. Proposal writers may be
requested to make an oral presentation to the
committee in support of a proposal.

Funds
available through instructional improvement
committee - Top
|
| The instructional
improvement committee (IIC) encourages, through
monetary grants, the application of existing
knowledge to specific teaching situations to
improve the quality of instruction at BHSU. Any
full time faculty member, full time adjunct
faculty or other full time staff member engaged
in student instruction may apply for grant funds
administered by the committee. Grant funding will
normally be available up to a maximum of $1,000
per project. Priority will be given to projects
that will have a broad-based, visible, continuing
impact of instruction across faculty members
and/or disciplines. Funds are available for
development of materials and methods to improve
teaching and learning, equipment to enhance
teaching and learning, travel to conferences or
workshops which enhance teaching and learning,
and
|
bringing consulting
lecturers and teaching specialists to campus to
offer presentations to and/or with faculty and
teaching-support staff at BHSU. Faculty members
who apply for grants to support travel to a
conference or workshop are limited to receiving
no more than one grant every three years. Proposals
for grant funding will be reviewed by the IIC on
a monthly basis. The deadline for submission will
be the last Friday of each month; a decision will
be made as soon as practicable on each proposal.
Ten copies of the proposals should be submitted
to the grants and special projects office, W220,
or to the chair of the committee, Sharon Strand.
Proposals will consist of proposal and budget
outlines following the specified format available
at the grants and special projects web page.

Faculty-research
committee has funds available - Top
|
| The faculty-research
committee has funds available for the current
fiscal year. Write a short (about three-page)
proposal. Proposal forms are available at the
academic affairs office. Deadline is Feb. 25. It
is anticipated that successful applicants will
request support for faculty release time,
research equipment, travel to research sites,
research support for the production of creative
work. Preference is given to new applicants
particularly in the areas of education, business,
social sciences and humanities. Two three-hour
release times are available for fall 2000 and
spring of 2001.

Funds for two
three-hour release times are available for the
spring and fall 2000 semesters. You can apply
now. The applicants are encouraged to contact
the committee members for advice prior to
completing their proposals. The members are John
Alsup, Steve Anderson, Lyle Cook, Tom Cox, Daniel
Farrington, Abdollah Farrokhi, chair; Jim Hess,
Kathleen Parrow, Shane Sarver and Rob Schurrer.
The research committee will not provide
salary. The committee may approve payment to
student or non-student research assistants. Mail
ten copies of your proposal to unit 9550.
