Yellow Jacket golf classic and sports auction raises $14,800 in scholarship dollars

Nearly 80 golfers participated in the 10th annual Gold Dust Yellow Jacket Golf Classic at the Spearfish Canyon Country Club. Proceeds from the golf tournament and sports auction raised more than $14,800 for athletic scholarships at BHSU. The Yellow Jacket Foundation at Black Hills State University was able to add more than $14,800 to its athletic scholarship fund recently at the tenth annual Gold Dust Yellow Jacket Golf Classic and Sports and Leisure Auction.

The annual fund raiser, which is open to the public, featured an 18-hole Texas best-shot golf tournament and a sports and leisure auction. Both events are designed to raise money to support Yellow Jacket athletics.

Steve Meeker, institutional advancement director at BHSU and coordinator of the fund raiser, said, "This year's event was very successful. We had 79 golfers that netted $4,906 and raised $9,958 from the auction."

Meeker said the Gold Dust's overall sponsorship of the day's events and the businesses that contributed individual hole prizes and auction items were once again important to the tournament's success and very much appreciated.

The tournament's winning foursome in the men's division were Ron Junek, Jack Lynass, Greg Hartman, and Myles Kennedy. Each received $50 in auction money, a BHSU t-shirt and a $25 gift certificate at the Spearfish Canyon Pro Shop. Prizes were donated by Financial Benefits/Harvey Krautschun, the Yellow Jacket Foundation and the BH Alumni Association.

The first-place couple’s team included Jim and Mickee Rarick and Al and Linda Lambert. Each received $50 in auction money, a BHSU t-shirt and a $25 gift certificate from the Spearfish Canyon Pro Shop. Prizes were donated by Wolff’s Plumbing and Heating, the Yellow Jacket Foundation and the BH Alumni Association.

The winning seniors' team for the fourth consecutive year was the foursome of Herman Boner, Paul Roach, Howard Harvey and Pat Freiberg. They were tied this year by the senior team of Cliff Feist, Ernie Davis, Robert Singer, and Walt Saubers. Each received $50 in auction money, BHSU t-shirt and a $25 gift certificate at the Spearfish Canyon Country Club. Gift sponsors were the Yellow Jacket Foundation and the BH Alumni Association.

Last but not least were the golfers at the end of the winner's column: John Ziegler, Tom Spawn, Mike Miller, and Barry Crowell. They received admission to the Filly’s Pub and Comedy Club in Rapid City.

Men’s putting contest winners were Lonnie Haugland and Norb Weisbeck, first and second. The winner received $50 in auction money and, admission to the Filly’s Pub and Comedy Club in Rapid City and the runner-up received $25 in auction money and Spearfish Canyon Country Club jacket.
