| The third annual conference
of the South Dakota Political Science and Public Affairs
Association will be held at the multipurpose room in the
Student Union Building at Black Hills State University on
Saturday, April 8, 2000. The conference will open with
brief introductions and a welcome address from Dr. Holly
Downing, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at 7:30
a.m.
A roundtable discussion on Elections 2000, moderated
by Dr. Stephen Stambough, North Dakota State University,
will begin at 8 a.m. Participants will include Dr. Jerry
Calvert, Montana State University, Dr. Gerry Thorsen,
University of Minnesota at Morris, and Dr. Barbara
Headrick, Moorhead State University.
A panel of academic papers and discussions, to be
chaired by Dr. Fred Zuercher, University of South Dakota,
will begin at 9:30 a.m. Papers on national and
international issues will be presented by Dr. Valerie R.
O''Regan from North Dakota State University, Dr. Jerry
Calvert, Montana State University, Dr. Christopher
McHorney from Southwest State University at Marshall,
Minn., Scott Cody, John Koch, and Mindy Roduner, from
Brookings, and Dr. Dennis Stevens from Augustana College.
The discussants include Dr. Del Lonowski and Dr. Gary
Aguiar from South Dakota State University, Jodie Geske,
aide to Senator Daschle, Dr. Tom Hills and Dr. Ahrar
Ahmad from BHSU.

Lunch will begin at 11:30
a.m. The luncheon keynote will be delivered by Dr. John
Usera, president of the Chiesman Foundation for
Democracy, Rapid City. The business meeting of the
association will begin at 1 p.m. It will be followed at 2
p.m. with a faculty development workshop to be conducted
by Dr. Gary Aguiar.
At 3:15 p.m. there will be a second roundtable
discussion on media and politics. This will be moderated
by Dr. Tim Martinez, BHSU, and will include Dr. John
Usera, Dr. Gary Aguiar, Ruth Yellowhawk, Director of the
South Dakota Policy Institute, Dan Schellenger of KEVN
TV, Mike Morgan of KNBN TV, Dave Melmer from Indian
Country Today, and a representative from the Rapid City
Journal.
Registration for the conference is $10 for students,
and $20 for others. All sessions except the lunch,
business meeting and faculty development workshop are
open to the public and free.
