Four inducted into Hall of Fame
Four people will be inducted into the Yellow Jacket Hall of
Fame this year during Swarm Day. Receiving awards and recognition
at the Yellow Jacket Hall of Fame banquet Friday, Sept. 24 at
6:15 p.m. at the Northern Hills Holiday Inn will be Bill Hughes,
Spearfish; Paul Hayashino, Stockton, Calif.; Steve Colling,
Hulett, Wyo.; and Bryce Christensen, Spearfish.
The four inductees to the Yellow Jacket Hall of Fame
and their induction categories are as follows:

Coach Bill Hughes coached golf, wrestling,
football and baseball at BHSU from 1965-1990. His 25-year
wrestling dual record includes 187 wins, 157 losses and
six ties. He also has four SDIC wrestling championships
to his credit. Hughes was a NAIA Rookie Coach of the Year
Award nominee in wrestling in 1965 and was the NAIA
District 12 Coach of the Year in 1970. His 1982 golf team
qualified for the nationals. Hughes was inducted into the
S.D. Wrestling Coaches' and the NAIA halls of fame.

Athlete
Paul Hayashino played four years of baseball for
Black Hill State University (1975-1978). He was selected
All-Conference four years, All-District his sophomore,
junior and senior years, and earned honorable mention
All-American recognition in 1978. His batting .339 his
senior year. He was also a four-year letterwinner.

Athlete Steve Colling won the SDIC Wrestling
Championship in 1980 at the 177-pound weight class. He
was also a three-time District 12 placer and four-time
NAIA National Tournament Qualifier. In 1979, Colling was
presented the Outstanding Wrestler Award at the BH
Invitational. In the U.S. Army he was a world-class
Greco-Roman wrestler. Colling was head coach of the
Jacket grapplers in 1990. |

Contributor Bryce Christensen played football
for the Yellow Jackets in the early 40s. Since that time,
Christensen has been an outstanding donor and supporter
to the Black Hills State University athletic department.
In 1989 Christensen established a scholarship in his name
for student-athletes at Black Hills State. In 1997 he
established a second athletic scholarship named the Bryce
and Clara Christensen Scholarship Fund. |
