Spearfish, S.D. – The Black Hills State University softball team is hosting the First Annual Guadalajara Invitational on Saturday, September 18.  The tournament will be held at the Black Hills State softball complex in Spearfish and is for coed softball teams.  Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Yellow Jacket softball team.

The Yellow Jackets looked good early in the afternoon defeating the Cougars 8-0. However, the Yellow Jackets were not able to keep the fire alive in the second game as they fell 1-10.

They had a solid effort with three golfers finishing in the top 10 after the first day of competition and as a team is currently sitting in third place.

The Yellow Jackets will take on Dakota State University on Sunday, March 21 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.  The Yellow Jackets will face the Trojans again on Monday, March 22 at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m.  All games will be played at the Parkview Softball Complex in Rapid City, S.D.

The Yellow Jackets softball team returned this past weekend from a very impressive road trip in Tucson, Arizona to open up the 2010 season.  Coach Gurney and the Yellow Jackets went 7-4 in their 11 games in Tucson against some of the best teams in the NAIA.  “We are extremely excited about how we played in Tucson but we know that the season is only beginning,” said Head Coach Amy Gurney.

Tucson, Arizona – Saturday marked the final day of the Tucson Inviational and the Yellow Jackets finished the tournament on a strong note defeating Cornerstone 6-1, losing to Olivet Nazarene 10-2 but then bouncing back against Judson with a 10-3 victory in their last game of the tournament.

Paige Albers, a senior at Doherty High School in Colorado Springs, CO has signed a letter of intent at Black Hills State University for softball beginning in the fall of 2010. Paige is the younger sister of current junior first baseman, Nicole Albers. Paige will study Journalism at BHSU. Her parents are Rob and Betsy Albers.

Entering its fourth year of competition, the Yellow Jackets softball team under head coach Amy Gurney, look to make some noise in the Dakota Athletic Conference in the 2010 spring softball season. The Yellow Jackets finished 4th in 2009 and expect to improve on that mark returning 10 players from last season. “Every year we expect to improve, commented head coach Amy Gurney.

Darci Herman of Rapid City, SD, Brook Grant of Chadron, NE, and Haylee McVicker of Alliance, NE have all signed a letter of intent to play softball at Black Hills State University for the 2010-2011 season. “It’s very important that we have local talent on the team, commented Coach Gurney. There are many athletes in this region with the potential to play at the college level. We want players on our team who represent that potential.”

Lenaya Vigil has signed a letter of intent to play softball beginning in the fall of 2010 for Black Hills State University.  Vigil is currently a senior at Northridge High School for athletics and attends University High School for her academics. Both schools are in Greeley, Colorado.  Lenaya also plays for the Triple Crown Stars club team during the off season.

Junior pitcher Karissa Norte from Aurora, Colorado was honored this past week by the Dakota Athletic Conference by being named DAC Softball Player of the Week.  In four games, Karissa batted .538 going 7-13 including two doubles, a home run, three runs scored, and five RBI's.  Freshman outfielder Maria Herber from Kadoka, South Dakota was also honored by being named All-Conference.  Herber was honored for her effort at the plate and in the outfield. Maria batted .429 for the season where she led the Yellow Jackets. Click above for more details.

Before this past weekend, the Yellow Jackets entered a two week conference road trip where they faced Jamestown College, Minot State University, and Dakota State University.  BHSU went 3-4 on the two week trip that included wins over Jamestown College and Dakota State.

The Yellow Jackets started their season traveling to Cocoa Beach, Florida where they played ten games during spring break to open their non-conference action.  The Yellow Jackets came out of the trip 6-4 playing against NCAA Division II & III teams.

16th Annual Gold Dust Yellow Jacket Auction To Be Held November 3, 2006
Spearfish, S.D. - The 16th Annual Gold Dust Yellow Jacket Auction will be held Friday, Nov. 3, 2006 at the Spearfish Park Pavilion. The Gold Dust Yellow Jacket Auction is coordinated by the Yellow Jacket Foundation in an effort to raise scholarship funds for Black Hills State student-athletes.
