Black Hills State women’s volleyball team closed out last weekend 4-0 with wins over Rocky Mountain College, Bemidji State University, Valley City State University, and Mayville State University. “This weekend was great from a team aspect as we gained confidence each match” said Coach Albers.
The Yellow Jackets entered the game tonight against rival South Dakota School of Mines 9-0. South Dakota School of Mines was also 9-0 setting the pace for a classic showdown of two DAC Conference teams.
In the first game the Yellow Jackets led most of the way until the Hardrockers tied the game at 24-24. In the final stretch Mines outscored BHSU 6-3 to take the first game 30-27.
In the second game the Jackets dominated leading the whole way taking the game 30-19. Freshman Maggie O’Neill showed why she will be a force for years to come as she hit the ball really well on the outside. “Maggie had a great game. She is really gaining confidence game by game and will only get better” added Coach Albers.
The third game was back and forth the whole way with the score being tied several times. In the end, with score tied at 30, the Jackets showed their experience by scoring two straight points to take game three 32-30.
The fourth game belonged to the Hardrockers as they led most of the way taking an early lead 14-11. The Jackets came right back to tie the game 16-16. Mines would eventually pull away in the final stretch to win game four 30-24 setting the scene for game five.
In game five the Jackets rolled early as they took an 8-0 lead and never looked back as they went on to win 15-6. The Yellow Jackets took the match winning 3-2. “Having six seniors and three sophomores with a ton of experience from last year has really helped us in the tight games” said Coach Albers. The lady Yellow Jackets will return in action Friday night at 7:00PM against Dakota Wesleyan University at the Young Center on the BHSU campus.
Coach Albers is off to his best start since he took over eight years ago, with a record of 10-0.
